Opinion: Doesn't anyone have anything better to do than shop on Christmas Day?

Jon_smal.gifJonathan Weinberg writes… It’s meant to be the one day of the year when you can have a total rest. No work (for most of us), nothing to do indoors other than eat, drink and be merry and with no real shops open, no reason to be tempted to spend cash on anything other than spare batteries that you forgot for those gadget presents and some cream for the mince pies.

So what on earth possessed people to finish up their turkey and pigs-in-blankets, watch the Queen’s Speech and then nip upstairs and buy a TV or toaster from the likes of Comet or Currys.

I don’t know, sure Christmas is a time to be with the family, or if not, it’s a time to get drunk on Advocaat or Sherry so that your handy is not even steady enough to use a mouse. It is not the time to be shopping online, no matter how many bargains there might be out there…

Nintendo losing $1.3bn of potential sales thanks to Wii shortages

wi-shortages-worldwide.jpgThat’s enough money to fund all of our fantasy lifestyles, and is the amount a New York Times report says Nintendo is losing out on this year thanks to Wii stock shortages.

James Lin, senior analyst at the MDB Capital Group says Nintendo “could easily sell double what they’re selling” – and it’s playing into the hands of the enemy. Sir Howard Stringer, boss of everything at Sony, said “I’m happy that the Wii seems to be running out…

Blu-ray Disc Association makes wild claims of 2.7 million players sold, forgets 74% of figure are PS3 sales

PS3-Blu-ray-sales.jpgI do feel a bit sad for perking my ears up every time I see the words ‘Blu-ray’ and ‘HD DVD’ mentioned in the same breath. There’s nothing I love more than a good ol’ fashioned format war.

Whilst the HD DVD camp is actually fairly transparent with their sales statistics (recently claiming to have sold 750,000 players), the Blu-ray Disc Association has always been cagey, never actually releasing figures on actual players sold.

The story being bandied about the playground today is that 2.7 million Blu-ray Disc players have been sold in the US so far, but of those 2.7 million? Yep, most of them are just PS3 sales…

Rumours detail how just 26,500 iPhones have been activated in UK, but is this accurate?

iphones-unlocked.jpgO2 and Apple are still being tight-lipped about the number of iPhone sales in the UK, but even more so, about how many activations they’ve had on the network.

Good thing The Register is here to blab to the internets however, about the gossip they wangled from ‘reliable channel sources’, that O2 has activated just 26,500 of the iBricks since it launched two weeks ago.

Either most people are unlocking them, to work…

Creative has sold 25 million MP3 players now, according to…Creative

creative-mp3-player-pic.jpgFor a company battling the MP3 giant Apple, 25 million MP3 player sales is extremely impressive stuff. Staff in all the Creative offices across the world are popping the Cava over the news, and Waitrose has already reported profits rising by more than 40% in the last 24 hours for bubbly.

Recognised as the second-largest supplier of the gadgets, the announcement “marks a major milestone in Creative history, as our player unit volume exceeds the combined unit sales from some of the biggest names…

HD DVD owners buy more movies than Blu-ray owners, in Europe at least

hd-dvd-euro-victory.jpgAnother week, another unsubstantiated series of boasts from HD format makers.

This week it’s the turn of HD DVD to do a bit of claiming about how well its doing, with the group saying European buyers buy more discs on HD DVD format than on “other” HD formats. Apparently, owners of HD DVD players have bought an average of 3.8 movies each, compared to an abysmal 0.7 attach rate…
