UK mobile phone users may end up paying to receive calls
With the UK’s mobile network operators likely to be forced to cut termination charges and roaming costs, they could try to recoup some cash by charging their customers to receive, as well as make, phone calls.
Many US consumers already pay to receive calls on their mobile phones, though the overall operating cost of a cell phone in the States is, generally, significantly cheaper than in Britain…
(Only!) Half the music stored on MP3 players is stolen
According to a survey from British Music Rights, only half of the music on the iPods/Zens/Sansas of the nation’s 14-24 year-olds had actually been paid for legitimately.
The average musical youth has 1770 tracks stored on their MP3 player of choice, but half of that lot’s been nicked off the internet or, more likely, copied from the hard drive…
iPhone users to get free access to BT Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots
From 11th July, finding a high speed public Wi-Fi network for your iPhone could get a lot easier, as O2 has done a deal with BT Openzone to open up over 3,000 hotspots. iPhone users will then get free, unlimited access to these hotspots, just as they currently do on the Cloud network, with no change to their monthly tariff…
iPhone 3G in the UK: New tariffs, free on selected plans, pay and go coming, biz plans
O2 has announced initial pricing details for the iPhone 3G, and it’s all looking good.
Look, there’s a new £30 per month tariff — that’s £5 cheaper than before. It’s pretty stingy on minutes and texts, but if you’re getting the iPhone primarily for surfing, you won’t care.
The 8GB iPhone is FREE on £45 and £75 per month tariffs, or £99 on the £30 and £35 per month ones…
Xbox 360 outsells PS3 in the UK thanks to little-known arthouse video game GTA IV
PlayStation3 and Xbox 360 both benefited BIG TIME from the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV, but it was Xbox 360 that took the larger and more sustained win.
Sales of Microsoft’s console were up a whopping 47% over the four weeks since GTA IV launched, according to UK stat-watcher Chart-Track, with PlayStation3 managing a rather more modest – and slightly disappointing…
Stupid spammers attempt to fool Brits with "Postcode Lottery" win
A number of email spammers couldn’t be bothered to do basic research on a British colloquialism, and tried to fool users into thinking they’d won a “Postcode Lottery”.
The email claims, “Winner We bring to your notice the winning letter from Nationale Postcode Lottery {United Kingdom Promotion Company} held on the 8th of May, 2008 through Internet ballot System among 10,000 Microsoft users.”…
UK mobile phone call costs could fall as tribunal investigates
The high cost of calling to and between mobile phones could drop in the future thanks to investigations by the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT).
The CAT found that Ofcom’s calculation of how much it should cost to call a mobile phone from a landline is still too high, something that BT agrees with, claiming consumers are overcharged £1bn each year…
Exposé! eBay UK not as Blu-ray friendly as other eBay sites
It’s come to my attention, through a recent attempt at flogging my copy of Casino Royale (every Blu-ray player owner has at least six copies), that eBay UK is not anywhere near as Blu-ray friendly as the US, or even Australia, Canada, or France. I’d test more sites, but that’s about the limit to my bilingualism.
Ever tried selling a Blu-ray on eBay UK? Ever other country’s site seems to have Blu-ray listed in the categories field, however not us in Blighty, who’re forced to lump it into the ‘DVD, Film & TV > DVDs’ or ‘DVD, Film & TV > Other Film Formats’ fields.
The winning HD format is not mentioned anywhere, and neither is HD DVD, which is also mentioned on all the aforementioned sites. Although dead formats such as MiniDisc have their very own boxes for you to tick, along with SACD, DAT, audio cassettes, floppy discs and VHS.
So can we cut to the chase already and label eBay UK as being a non-embracing technological Luddite?..
O2 hints at iPhone 3G "in the coming weeks", points at Apple
Whether cleverly crafted PR or simply letting his guard down, O2’s CEO, Matthew Key, has told journalists that Telefonica Europe and Apple will make a joint statement about the next generation iPhone “in the coming weeks”.
Though no-one has explicitly stated the next iPhone will be 3G, pretty much everyone expects it to be, and most eyes are on Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference in early June, which certainly qualifies as “the coming weeks”…
Vodafone rolling out HSDPA to six more UK cities
Vodafone users in London should already be enjoying improved mobile broadband access speeds thanks to HSPDA implementation last year. Soon, mobile users in Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Reading will also have access to faster mobile Internet…
