PlayStation Phone rumours heat up

We’ve reported on it a few times in the past but it seems that the Playstation phone rumours just won’t go away.

Reuters are reporting that Sony Ericsson could even have a project team put together to develop a Playstation-based phone as early as next month.

In the past there have been stumbling blocks with the development of the Playstation phone due to Sony not allowing Ericsson to use the Playstation brand. It seems though as this might be about to change.

It would definitely make sense for this concept to go ahead, not just because Sony Ericsson has successfully used the Walkman and Cybershot brands successfully in mobile phone handsets in the past, but also because a mobile phone would be the perfect platform for a download-only games platform similar to that of the impending PSP Go.

PSP Go facing trouble before it's even released

There’s trouble a brewing in Playstation land. First off Activision CEO Bobby Kotick says that he is “concerned” with the PS3 and its high costs to both developers and customers and now two games retailers have slammed the PSP Go by stating that there is hardly any demand for the forthcoming handheld.

Chips spokesman Don McCabe event went as far as to say that “he can’t see any justification for stocking it”. Chips has 36 stores nationwide.

Chris Harwood, on behalf of Grainger Games, which operates 21 stores in the UK said that “the PSP just seems to have died as a format” and stated that Grainger Games only sell around five PSPs a week in all of their shops. He expressed apprehension over the PSP Go’s proposed price of £200-£230. “It seems really high,” he said. “The models they’ve got out now are struggling at basically £129.”

Grainger Games and Chips are relatively small fish in the gaming industry but the comments aren’t going to be very welcome at Sony HQ.

Sony Ericsson Playstation phone nipped in the bud by… Sony

psphone.jpg

In the past, we’ve written a few times about the possibilities of a Playstation phone surfacing. For the moment, though, those dreams will have to be dashed on the rocks, as sources suggest that Sony refused to allow Sony Ericsson the use of its Playstation brand.

Sony Ericsson’s done quite well with its Cybershot and Walkman phones, and many assumed that a Playstation gaming phone would be next, but it’s been claimed by Sony Ericsson that Sony would only allow the use of the Playstation brand if the experience on a handset is sufficiently high enough and matches the experience of Sony’s standalone devices.

That kind of tech isn’t quite possible yet, and Sony Ericsson is in the midst of cost-cutting measures, so for the moment, I’m labeling this one “Fail”. Sorry mobile gaming enthusiasts, you’ll have to wait for the perfect gaming phone – we’re not there yet.

Danish police surround gamers, after loud PlayStation session triggers SWAT team attack

danish-playstation-shooting-confusion.jpg

We’re not huge fans of Sony’s console division, but we wouldn’t go quite so far as to say that anyone who owns a PlayStation wants shooting – but that’s very nearly what happened to a couple of Danish gamers over the weekend.

A concerned neighbour heard gunshot sounds coming from their apartment – damn those cheap partition walls and declining modern building standards – and called the cops to investigate the possible slaughter going on inside flat 11b. Only there was no gun, or slaughter, only a game involving shooting being played way too loudly by a couple of kids…

Mamma Mia! ABBA comes to SingStar on PS2 & PS3 this Christmas

abba.jpg

It’s easy to forget poor old SingStar, crushed into the mud of the Guitar Hero/Rock Band wars, but there are people out there who just want to get up off the sofa and let rip with their vocal chords without the aid of any silly instruments.

This is not my outlook on home-based popstar games you understand, but I can see how the endless rock could get to some very strange, lifeless people out there; the sort that dance around handbags or form a circle with their mates and bounce up and down every time ‘Come on Eileen’ graces the airwaves. These people may like to know that ABBA have agreed a deal with SingStar to bring their catalogue to PS2s and PS3s…

E3 2008, best twenty video games, now done in Haiku

According to my watch, E3 is now finished. The conference has been shifted and downsized and generally turned upside down by format changes but it is still one of the biggest video games spectacles in the world. Nearly everything worth looking out for in the coming months and, in several cases, years was on show. I'm can't write up each one individually as it would take me till September, so here they are in a convenient Haiku form. I take no responsibility for whether these actually conform to rigorous Haiku format requirements.

Sony PlayTV for PlayStation 3 landing on September 10th

playtv-ps3.jpg

Much to our disappointment (but certainly not surprise) Sony confirmed following its E3 press conference that the newly unveiled PlayStation Store TV and Movies download service would not be hitting European shores until next year. Maybe. But don’t fret, telly loving gamers out there, Sony has something in the way of a consolation prize: Sony PlayTV. And it’s landing in a little less than two months.
