P2P site, OiNK, shut down by pigs, sorry, police

oink-pig.jpgOink! Oink! One of the largest sources of illegally-downloaded music, OiNK, has been closed down by the pigs, sorry, British and Dutch police. Oink! Ok, I’ll stop now…

Interpol shut it down in the early hours of this morning, after a chap in Middlesbrough was arrested today on counts of conspiracy to defraud and infringement of copywright law, after leaking 60 massive pre-release albums this year to the members-only site. Due to the popularity of the P2P site, us casual…

Nokia reveals UK price of N81, and us Brits are paying extra!

nokia-n81-price-uk.jpg

Yesterday, I reported on Nokia’s announcement that its new N81 handsets were shipping, including the whizzy N81 8GB model. The press release gave the estimated retail price as 430 Euros (around £300).

However, Nokia’s been in touch to confirm the actual UK SIM-free price of the N81 8GB, and it’s going to set us back £394 including VAT. Ouch! I’m not sure where that extra £94 has come from, but it’s probably the government’s fault *shakes fist at taxation injustice*.

My Chemical Toilet wants you to stop listening to your iTunes, and give The Hype Machine, Deezer and others a go

snoop-dogg-with-computer.jpgYou still listen to CDs on your home stereos and discover new music in NME and Uncut? Bah! That’s completely 2004, noobs. Streaming, and discovering, music online is the way forward. Just ask iTunes, MySpace and Last.fm, who are all industry leaders within the market.

But don’t let Steve Jobs, Rupert Murdoch and the East London boys rule your listening habits. Here’s where our music and festivals blog, My Chemical Toilet, can help you out. Stuart, our man-in-charge-of-the-office-speakers, has gathered…

More free music downloads: this time from The Verve and the Charlatans

verve.jpgThose big bands can’t stop giving music away, now they’ve got the bug. We already knew that The Charlatans were planning to give their new album away with UK radio station XFM, but they’re kicking off with their new single ‘You Cross My Path’, which is available as a 256kbps MP3 download here.

Meanwhile, the freshly reformed Verve are also at it, teaming up with NME.com to give away, ahem, a 14-minute jam from their first session back in the recording studio.

Nokia N81 8GB music phone ships… for £300

nokia-n81-n-gage.jpg

Nokia has announced that its Nokia N81 8GB mobile is now shipping, alongside the slightly runtier N81 (and really, if you’re going to buy a top-spec music phone, you want the 8GB version…).

The N81 8GB has an unsubsidised price of 430 Euros (about £300). Normally, I’d ignore that, given that operators generally slash a huge chunk of that price for contract users. However, the N81 has been controversially missed out of some operators’ Christmas handset lineups, meaning that for some networks, you’ll have to pay the unsubsidised price to get one.

iTunes drops price of DRM-free tracks in UK as well as US, adds more choons

gold-coins-chocolate.jpgA couple of days ago it was announced that Apple would be dropping the price of iTunes Plus DRM-free tracks on iTunes from $1.29 to just 99cents, matching nasty DRM-ridden tracks.

Only EMI tracks are sold as 256kbps, DRM-free AAC files, however starting today certain indie labels (Sub Pop!!!!) will be able to flog their wares in the same higher-quality format, in total two million…

Samsung's new F330 musical slider web phone

samsung-F330.jpgIt’s a rather nice slidy one with HSDPA and a web browser for updating your tech blog from the safety of bed, with a 2megapixel camera and an easily large enough 2.1″ QVGA screen.

She (all mobiles are ladies) can take microSD cards to boost her ludicrously puny 24MB of built-in memory, and you’re able to fill her right up with MP3, AAC, AAC+ eAAC+ (hasn’t AAC been busy recently?) and WMA…
