Nokia has announced that its “Comes With Music” service, which it has been signing up music companies for several months now, will go live in the UK… sometime in October.

Yes, this “groundbreaking music service” is still keeping the nitty-gritty details about itself hidden. What we do know is that The Carphone Warehouse will be the exclusive pre-pay retailer for the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic “Comes With Music” edition, and begins taking pre-orders for it today. Presumably, though not confirmed, consumers will be able to use other Nokia multimedia handsets as well — you know, ones that are less than a year old…

Nokia teams up with Lonely Planet, bringing city guides to Nokia Maps

nokia_navigator_maps.jpg

Sat-nav devices with travel guides on aren’t a new thing, and in fact Lonely Planet has already partnered with Route 66 and Navman, but the newly announced alliance with Nokia may be the global travel company’s biggest to date.

The deal will see Lonely Planet content made available on Nokia Maps 2.0, with travellers able to purchase and download the city guides they want, ready to use when globetrotting…

Nokia announces 8800 Carbon Arte: more high-end mobile goodness for rich techies

nokia_8800_carbon_arte.jpg

Nokia has expanded its 8800 Arte series of upper class mobile handsets with the launch of the 8800 Carbon Arte.

As you might have guessed, the handsets are engineered from carbon fibre, titanium, polished glass, and stainless steel.

While many people are trying to carry lighter mobile devices so they’re not weighed down by them all day, Nokia is making quite an issue of the “impressive weight” of the phone. Yes, I’d love to pay loads of money for a heavy phone…

Interzone: get air quality reports on your mobile phone

mobile_phone_air_quality_tester.jpg

Interzone, currently in prototype form, is a sensor which could be attached or built in to a mobile phone to give it the ability to monitor the surrounding air quality.

That way, you’d not only be able to look at the smog hanging above the streets of London, but measure it too. Nothing like a scientific reading to give to your doctor as proof that’s why you’re wheezing your way around the capital…

Look who's stalking: FindMe now supports s60 Nokias.

Facebook stalkers everywhere will be delighted to learn that Electric Pocket has finally got around to releasing a client for FindMe, the Facebook stalking geo-location application, for s60 mobile phones (ie: most high-end Nokias).

FindMe has been available for Windows Mobile and Blackberry devices for ages, and can be used to “tag” locations (“home”, “work”, etc) and automatically update your Facebook profile with your location. Somewhat uniquely, it doesn’t require your phone to have GPS to function – it works out your position based on nearby mobile phone masts alone. Whilst this is perhaps slightly less accurate than GPS, it does mean that more phones are compatible…

Nokia to use Zune Marketplace? "Maybe", says grapevine

zune_family.jpg

An interesting rumour has appeared on the “that’s a pretty logical move now you think about it” pile – apparently Nokia and Microsoft are looking for a tie up between Microsoft’s Zune Marketplace and Nokia’s mobile phones.

This makes a lot of sense for two ugly kids for whom prettyboy Apple is the bane of their lives – Microsoft doesn’t make phones, having repeatedly denied that they’re planning a “Zune phone”, and Nokia doesn’t make dedicated music players…
