Top five IFA 2007 stories from Tech Digest
IFA is well and truly over, with most Berlin-bound geeks back in their natural habitats, in our case, Shiny Towers. If you missed our coverage last week, and over the weekend, here are the top five most news-worthy stories. Expect these products to be rolled out over the next few months.
1.) LG’s ‘Design Art’ LCD TVs – two models, the LF75, LB75, with the first model coming in 1080p Full HD and 10,000:1 contrast ratio, and the latter model packing a still-impressive 720p/1080i and 8,000:1 contrast ratio. Three HDMI 1080p inputs and LG’s Intelligent Eye technology which ‘optimises brightness and contrast according to ambient light’ are also included…
LG unveils new BH200 Super Multi Blu player – now with HDi
We got quite flustered over LG’s BH100 Super Multi Blu player (pictured) when it was announced at CES this year, what with it offering a solution (a very expensive solution, admittedly) to the dilemma over whether to choose Blu-ray or HD DVD.
However, LG has just announced the follow-up BH200 product, which is due to go on sale next month in the US for around $1,000.
LG Viewty cameraphone gets a UK release date
We’ve written about the LG Viewty phone before, and Susi even got hands on with it at the IFA show last week. But today, LG has confirmed that its slinky 5.1-megapixel camphone will be available to buy in the UK from mid-October.
IFA 2007: Samsung's BD-UP5000 – the world's first Blu-ray/HD DVD player?!
Samsung, more than any other company ever, loves its world firsts and surprise, surprise IFA is teeming with them. The one that is getting the hacks most excited is the BD-UP5000 Duo HD player, which it is billing as the first ever dual format optical high definition player. By that it means the first to have both Blu-ray and HD DVD players on board.
IFA 07: LG DVR Pause and Play TV and PC users
For those of you into your pause and play TV, LG also had new 160GB DVRs with dual digital tuners on display. Each will naturally allow you to watch one program while recording another. They’ve got Freeview Playback Certification from the UK’s Digital TV group, so you can record subtitles and closed captions, in addition to video and audio, as well as intelligently schedule recording times in case a TV programme over-runs.
LG 'Viewty' U990 confirmed as the Prada-less mobile with extra-spiffy specs
I’m quickly becoming obsessed with LG’s as-yet unreleased U990 mobile, with it having the aesthetics of the LG Prada, minus the Prada branding, and compensating by packing a huge amount of extra features for us less fashionable sorts who shop at Primark.
Susi got her hands on one last week, and even did a quick video review, with thanks to the network 3 (who’ll be selling the phone later this year), but we haven’t seen any proper photos of it yet – until now. It’s just been officially confirmed, and will be flying storewide by Autumn this year. Which, err, judging by the weather, should’ve been about three months ago…
Shiny Video: LG LAN-9600R and LAN-9700R Sat Nav systems
Last night Alex from Shiny Shiny and I met Daniel Aziz from LG and he was kind enough to take us through one of LG’s revamped systems for the car. This is a brilliant media player (DivX included), GPS and bluetooth system – I was seriously considering buying a car last night simply so I could have an excuse to own one. In this video, Alex learns all about the wonders of the LAN-9600R and LAN-9700R from Daniel…
Shiny Preview: LG U990, soon to be on 3
There’s going to be a battle of epic proportions this Christmas. The Grinch and Christmas Spirit? Only Fools and Horses Christmas Special against The Vicar of Dibley Christmas Special?
No, this is the battle of the 5 megapixel camera phones. LG’s offering is the U990, which is like the Prada phone, but better. It’s even being touted as the iPhone killer (obviously). It’s got a touch screen with vibrating feedback…
LG has gone mental and made a TV out of gold
As if TVs weren’t expensive enough already. The new LG home theatre system is plastered with 24 carat gold, and is the most needless, pointless and overpriced innovation in home cinema since Blu-ray and HD-DVD came along.
The ludicrously OTT 71″ set, which uses PDP technology to display its HD pictures…
