Nokia planning ambitious cross-platform N-Gage / PC game
Later this year, Nokia is having its second crack at the mobile gaming market with a relaunch of N-Gage. However, rather than being a standalone gaming handset, this time it’ll be a mobile gaming platform that runs across a bunch of Nokia’s Series 60 phones.
Web 2.0 Startup of the Day: iPling social network for iPhone
The weekend has seen the announcement of about 76 new services for iPhone users, many of which are basically websites looking to get a few column inches with a quick Safari-friendly redesign. However, iPling at least sounds interesting – its a location-based social networking service for iPhone users.
Atari Flashback portable old-school gaming
The Atari Flashback is a compact package running for 15 hours at a time on 3 AAA batteries, to let you re-experience the huge Atari pixels of yesteryear. Games are uploaded via USB (though it’s not entirely clear how yet) and it has two joystick controller ports so you can even do full head-to-head gaming. Screen resolution is 320X240 and the NTSC versions will have AV out. It’ll also be in the glorious fake oak grain we’ve come to expect from quality Atari-related goods. [GT]

Transformers mobile game: their war, our world, your phone
To tie in with the imminent release of The Transformers movie, glu has created a mobile game in which you play as Optimus Prime and fight Decepticons. You can convert from vehicle to robot and use special weapons in each form. To play, go to The Official Transformers Mobile Website but be warned: you have to use a phonepad for the controls and you only get about a minute of trial time so don’t think you’re going to rack up the points. AMA rules video gaming not (officially) addicting
After careful deliberation, the AMA has decided videogame addiction is not an official mental disorder. This is unsurprising, since mainstream medicine has generally missed the boat about how computers are altering the human brain and social interactions, but if they had decided it was in fact a disorder, I’d despair of their ability to ‘treat’ it meaningfully, so this is the better of two foolish outcomes. Wii gets WiiWare: finally some original downloadable games
For all its marvellous traits, Nintendo’s Wii console is lacking in one fairly important area: original downloadable games.
Xbox 360’s Live Arcade has loads, and PS3’s PlayStation Network is rolling out a number of original titles too. But Nintendo’s Virtual Console has stuck to its rigid policy of only selling old retro games, rather than new titles.
Lara Croft opens Pink Beach – but only women are invited
If you saw someone strolling towards you on the beach clutching two big guns, you’d probably run. Or at least hide behind a nearby toddler. But what if it was Lara Croft? You’d probably still run, to be honest. While checking that Mario wasn’t lurking nearby to trip you up.
