Samsung teaming up with Yahoo to offer web-enhanced TV, via the Widget Channel

Samsung will, so it is believed, announce a deal with Yahoo to include a series of web apps with its forthcoming HDTV range at this week’s IFA tech show.

The apps, powered by Yahoo Widgets and operating under the name Widget Channel, will let you augment your TV-watching experience, having all sorts of little windows popping up to give you news feeds, tell you what the weather is doing outside and let you watch share prices plummet throughout that afternoon’s episode of Countdown…

HANNSpree launches HT11 19-inch HD ready digital TV

HANNSpree has announced its HT11 19-inch HD ready digital TV, promoting it as an ideal second telly for the bedroom, kitchen, or study.

The 19-inch screen size coupled with 170 degree viewing angle offers a decent solution when it can be hard to place a TV in a smaller room.

It’s HD ready, and while its 1,280 x 1,024 resolution isn’t going to display full 1080p if connected to a Blu-ray player, at this size that doesn’t really matter…

BBC natural history, travel, factual programmes to air on Babelgum

BBC Worldwide has announced a deal which will see a range of the Corporation’s natural history, travel, and factual programmes placed on the Internet TV platform Babelgum.

Excerpts from shows such as David Attenborough’s documentaries, Top Gear, and Tribe, will be globally available on three new branded channels: “BBC LoveEarth”, “BBC Knowledge”, and “BBC Entertainment”…

Consumers and retailers STILL confused about digital switchover

British retailers may have committed to phasing out analogue TV equipment but it doesn’t seem to be happening very quickly.

A recent parliamentary report echoes other surveys which suggest that nearly half of all TVs sold in the first half of last year were analogue. While the situation may have improved since then, the £200m “digital switchover” campaign appears not to have worked on all consumers…
