SHINY VIDEO PREVIEW: The Archos 9 PC tablet
I got my hands on the Archos 9 at this morning’s launch. I have to say I like it. It did feel a tad heavy – but at less than 800g that was probably just an illusion because it is so slight it doesn’t look as though it will weigh hardly anything.
The touchscreen was very responsive and the pop-up keyboard is almost full-sized so unless you’ve got some extremely fat fingers there shouldn’t be any problem.
Also at the event Tony Limrick, MD of Archos Northern Europe told the assembled hacks to keep 15th September free for an Archos IMT Android announcement.
He didn’t give too much information away apart from to say that the IMTs would combine what Archos does best – multimedia playback and so on – and combine it with an Android based telephony system – complete with Google Apps.
Is Apple launching a low-end iPhone and tablet PC?
If rumours are to be believed, then Apple will be launching an “iPhone lite” and a “media pad” this summer. People “familiar with the matter” have been yapping away to BusinessWeek, and let slip that the new devices might coincide with the release of iPhone OS 3.0.
One device is a smaller, cheaper, iPhone that’ll allow users to make calls and send texts, but probably cut back on other features like GPS and the camera. The other is a tiny tablet PC, smaller than a Kindle, that would allow owners to view HD video and listen to music. It would also be able to place calls over Wi-Fi.
The rumour has arisen due to Apple’s ongoing talks with Verizon, a US phone network. The company would be the distributors of the devices, if they come through to reality.

T-Mobile plotting Android home phone and tablet
Remember, before we all had mobiles, the days of the home phone. Having to drag the cable across the hallway and under your door if you wanted to have a private conversation without the rest of your family listening in? That mysterious ‘Mercury’ button?
Those days are mostly at an end, but there are a few people still buying landline phones. As a result, companies are still making them – including T-Mobile who, rumour has it, will be bringing out an Android version next year. There’ll be a docking station that lets you sync it and recharge the battery.
On top of that, there’s a 7″ Android tablet in the works too. There’s very little detail being shared, but it’ll apparently let you ‘check the weather’ or ‘manage data across a wide variety of devices’. Sounds good. More when we get it.

Axiotron updates its ModBook Mac tablet
Remember the ModBook “Mac Tablet” we showed off at Macworld a couple of years ago? Well, since Apple hasn’t decided to release its own tablet computer yet, Axiotron has updated its own offering.

The other day at a trade show I got some hands-on experience with the Archos 7 media tablet. You can see the results in the video above, but what I really wonder is who the market for these devices is. They’re not easily controllable enough to have a good web experience. The streaming media is good, but if you’re in wi-fi range of your server, then why would you need to stream?

Lenovo announces Thinkpad with built in Wacom tablet. It's huge.
Laptops are generally known for portability – the idea being that you can sling it in your bag and carry it with you wherever you go. I wouldn’t try lugging about the Lenovo ThinkPad W700 too much though, as you might risk back problems. It’s massive.
Perhaps the main reason it is so gigantic is the built in Wacom tablet – which in the photo looks like a massive touchpad…
OPINION: It really doesn't matter what Steve Jobs reveals in June
Because every Apple fan and gadget fashionista will automatically buy it anyway. As long as it’s sleek and expensive enough to brag about on the internet.
Even if Mr Jobs pulls a solar-powered calculator (iAddsUP) out of his shirt pocket and announces it goes on sale – tomorrow! – for a mere $699 for the 8-digit screened version and $799 for the 10-digit screened model, it’ll be a smash.

Apple revealing tablet device at WWDC?
Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off this year on June 9, and every Mac fan is already suffering sleepless nights and moist dreams over what gadget Steve Jobs may pull out of his trousers this time.
Today’s rumour is centred around Apple’s showing at WWDC and the current iPhone drought. If the 3G iPhone hits before June as these current shortages suggest, what will Steve flop out at Apple’s premier tech showcase in June?
Apparently, according to MacRumours, it’s going to be a multitouch-powered tablet computer. Apple itself called WWDC a “landmark event” – so it clearly thinks it’s got something decent…
