Sony unveils 34 new VAIO notebook PCs across six series

sony_vaio_type_c_notebook_pcs.jpgSony has gone overboard with its latest selection of VAIO notebook PCs, offering 34 choices across six different series.

Briefly, these are series C, F, R, S, T, and “TV PC”, though as these are initially destined for the Japanese market, I’m gleaning their specifications from a rough translation of the Japanese press release.

The VAIO Series C seems to be as much about colour as it is about features, with notebook casing coming in a variety of lush shades including indigo blue, luxury pink, pure white, and an untranslatable shade of red.

It seems as if the PC can play back audio and video without having to be fully booted – it certainly has dedicated buttons for multimedia. It also has a built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam, a 14.1-inch widescreen LCD, and is just 2.1cm thick.

PC World scraps free laptop offer after one month

pc_world_logo.gifPC World has scrapped its free laptop with Orange broadband package just one month after it was first launched, blaming huge demand for using up the “tens of thousands” of notebook PCs within weeks.

Many customers must have been of the same opinion as Jonathan, that the deal looked very good: “Let’s face it, who among us is ever going to turn down a free gift – especially when it’s worth up to £500.”

Now, those who faltered will have to take up PC World’s generous offer on their website’s apology page. “We’re Sorry. This deal has now ended. You can still take advantage of our great laptop deals at PC World…”

Gee thanks.

Fujitsu lining up gargantuan 1.2TB hard drives for notebooks

fujitsu-hard-drives.jpgFujitsu’s found a way to start charging more money for hard drives – inventing a new technology to increase their capacity.

We’ll copy the method it used directly from the Fujitsu announcement as, frankly, it’s all a bit bewildering. Apparently, “one-dimensionally aligned alumina nanohole patterns with 25nm pitch were produced to support one Terabit/in2 bit recording density.”

linux_penguin.gifDell continues its push into Linux-based computers with the launch of two Inspiron notebooks in Europe.

The 6400n and 530n will come with the Ubuntu 7.04 Linux operating system ready installed. According to Dell, over 30,000 community members at the Ideastorm website asked for Dell to consider launching systems with the Linux operating system, with 100,000 participating in a follow-up survey to determine which Linux system to offer.

Giles Deacon for Intel Asus W5 limited edition laptops

Fancy our fashionably-attired sisters over at Catwalk Queen, getting the scoop on a new laptop range from Intel before us! Alright, so they have been designed by legendary fashion designer Giles Deacon, but that hasn’t stopped us from getting in a strop that they found out before us.

I might’ve said yesterday that I would never own a fashion mobile phone, like the new possible Samsung/Armani collaboration, but I think I’ll have to swallow my words already, less than 24 hours later, as I’d happily buy one of these fashion laptops…

Destroy your Mac laptop and use it to control Pong's paddles

wiipongmac.jpg
You’d be forgiven for thinking Tech Digest had turned into a blog focussing purely on ways to hack the game Pong and play it through various mediums other than your arcade or Atari systems. No, we’re not renaming ourselves Pong Digest, much to the distress of these guys, sorry.

One such Pong-enthusiast has created a version of the game to run on his Mac laptop using the sudden motion sensors and microphone. People who smother their Macs in protective laptop cases or daren’t take it out into the wild should avoid this game, as it actually involves ohmygod tilting your laptop vigorously and potentially harming your laptop’s microphone by screaming into it. Tilting the laptop controls the direction of the paddle as you’d expect, and raising your voice, by say, screaming into the microphone, actually increases the size of the paddle.

Take a look at the video under the jump for some Apple/Pong-hybrid humour, and the link where you can actually download the game for yourself…

A laptop Decepticons pine over, Haier's G70 Transformers notebook

haier-laptop-transformers.jpg As everyone should know by now (and if you don’t grrr, you’re letting Team Geek down), Transformers – THE MOVIE! – is coming out very shortly here in the UK, but those lucky yanks have had it since the 2nd. Well, at least we got Hot Fuzz first, right? Right?

Die-hards who can’t wait until the 27th for it to debut in British cinemas can snag this Transformers themed notebook from Haier. Sure, it may look like a simple ol’ decalled laptop, but roaring under the hood of the robot-in-disguise are specs even the Autobots would kill for. The G70 features a 1920 x 1200 17-inch screen, 2GB of RAM, 120GB Hard drive, runs on Intel’s PM965 chipset and has a whole bunch of other features I’m not going to pretend I understand…
