GALLERY: T-Mobile G1 unboxing pictures – unleashing the Android

I’m often unmoved by internet unboxings, very often in fact. But images of a Google Android T-Mobile G1 is something a little different both because we’re all as curious as children at the top of the stairs spying on their parents’ dinner parties and because I think I’m going to get one now that my contract’s run out and I’m bored of looking at everyone else’s iPhones.

We followed the G1 at launch and on video but nothing quite says hello like a good old fashioned gallery. Click on the image below to start the tour.

The Scan Toaster: concept USB gizmo burns pictures onto toast

scan_toaster.jpg

There seems to be a fascination with burning recognisable images into toast, and we’ve covered quite a few already, but this concept (which I really hope Electrolux decide to make) is for a USB-powered Scan Toaster.

One of the nine finalists of this year’s DesignLab competition, the Scan Toaster can “print” news, weather, and pictures on to bread, and was developed by Sung Bae Chang of Sejong University in South Korea.

The concept is fairly simple. Plug in the toaster to a free USB port, place the bread, and the software will then start burning whatever it is you want.

I’m sure overzealous health and safety officers would instantly ban this should it ever make it to production. I suppose in an age of saving paper, this method of creating a hard copy of a document needn’t go to waste after being read. Just don’t try to fax it.

And now, for your stomach’s pleasure, here are the Top Ten Tech Toasties. If you can recreate these in an ordinary toaster, we’ll be really impressed. Click on the image below to see the whole gallery.

5 Best and 5 Worst iAccessories for iPods and iPhones

If there's one thing the world probably doesn't need more of, it is media studies graduates. If there's two, it is probably media studies graduates and iPod cases.

There's so many hanging around (iPod cases, that is, though there's probably a fair few unemployed media graduates too) because the iPod has been so ludicrously successful, and a "product eco-system" has built up around it, and other companies have released companion products to try and make some money of their own out of it. Apple don't mind it either, as it expands the functionality of their products and they get to license a "compatible with iPod" logo and rake in the cash for doing little or no work. It's just like nature: the parasites and the host have developed a symbiotic relationship.

But with so many billions of parasites to choose from… what accessories should you get for your iPod? I present to you, the top five best and worst iAccessories…

Stinking (rich) students own six grand's worth of gadgets, instruments and clothes

stacks-of-money-2(2).jpg

I’d better not hear any more students moaning about how little money they have, because a new survey suggests that the average student has over £6,000 worth of gadgetry, musical instruments, and clothes knocking around in their digs.

Two years ago students “only” had around £2,000 of goods, but Endsleigh Insurance found that it’s an increasingly high-tech world, with mobile phones, laptops, and desktop computers now winging their way to university. Interestingly, though, some students spend even more on musical instruments, with an average value of £689, though only one in four have such gear, while four in five have a laptop PC…
