3 to launch one-touch YouTube mobile phone in UK early next year

With all the fuss surrounding the likes of the iPhone (O2) and the HTC G1 (T-Mobile), it seems that 3 is feeling a little left out, and so has said that it will launch a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone offering one button access to YouTube.

Due to be launched first in Italy, followed by the UK early next year, the phone will allow users to upload videos directly to YouTube. Sounds like a recipe for disaster as it becomes even easier to upload videos of drunken nights out. According to 3 Italia, mobile service usage increases by around one-third when direct access is supported — in other words, stick a button on a mobile phone that gives access to just one service, and people are more likely to use it. NOISE GATE: Why music subscription services will eventually work

This is the second installment of Noisegate, my weekly column on digital music. If you’re interested, then you can find last week’s, as well as future weeks’ columns right here.

This week I’m going to talk about subscription services and mobile phones. With the launch of Nokia’s “Comes with Music” expected this Thursday, and Sony Ericsson’s “PlayNow” service expected soon, too, I thought now would be a good time to muse on whether subscription services will ever really work in the long term.

Shiny Video Review: Sony Ericsson W980i

In the above video, Lucy gets her hands on the rather-pretty Sony Ericsson W980i. It’s got decent music specs, decent camera specs and a nice interface. It doesn’t, of course, have a 3.5″ jack, because Sony want you to buy their expensive headphones, but it does come with a big-ass speaker on it – perfect for annoying otherwise-pleasant people on the bus.

The Sony Ericsson W980i is out now, and price will depend on contract.

Just kidding. It’s actually called “Playnow”, named after their existing “Playnow Arena” a-la-carte download service available only in Scandinavia…

Wii-style Tomb Raider and Sonic on your mobile

Sony has further advanced its mobile gaming system, with a Bluetooth enabled handset for more interactive gaming. The small, hand-held Zeemote JS1 features a joystick, effectively meaning an old-school analogue controller, which is always welcome.

The Zeemote JS1 will come bundled with Sony’s W760i phone, pre-loaded with two games, and a further 16 will be available to download from the Sony website. Since the two basic games, however, are both all-time classics in Tomb Raider and Sonic the Hedgehog, most users shouldn’t need to venture into the additional games too much to satisfy their gaming needs.
