Orange and T-Mobile announce merger

Orange and T-Mobile have confirmed they are to merge to create the UK's biggest mobile phone company. Orange, owned by France Telecom, and T-Mobile, owned by Germany's Deutsche Telecom, have decided to merge in order to minimise potential conflict with the UK's strict competition regulation bodies.

Orange announces Toshiba TG01 release

Orange has announced that the Toshiba TG01 will be exclusively available from tomorrow. It will be available for free – but only if you’re prepared to sign up for a £40 a month, 2-year contract.

The plan will give you 1200 minutes of calls a month with unlimited texts and web browsing. It’s not cheap, but hey, you’ll be getting a very powerful smartphone free of charge.

Check out Dan’s preview video as well as his comparison of the TG01 against other flagship smartphones.

Also, check out Toshiba’s very own preview video:

Order via the Orange shop.

LG GD910 watchphone out on Orange next month

LG-watch-phone.png

LG and Orange have taken a fair old while to get their famous watchphone to market after its introduction at MWC earlier this year. I went off the idea the minute I heard it cost £1,000 and, seeing as Orange is only going to offer the wristset for PAYG or SIM only for a limited time, it appears as if you’re going to have to stump up for the full grand rather than rely on a subsidised 300-month contract.

The GD910 watch comes with a Bluetooth headset, built-in speaker, touchscreen and supports HSDPA and video calls. It’s out in August provided you can a) afford one and b) are mentally strong enough to actually use one in public. Come on, admit it. It looks like fun. Wait for the small breaking of your heart when the price point is officially announced.

Orange GlastoNav – your perfect festival buddy

glastoNav_phone.jpg

Orange has released an update to their GlastoNav app ahead of this weekend’s festival. The app will work on most smartphones and across all networks.

GlastoNav will provide info on all the bands performing at the festival – with bios written by The Guardian. More useful than that is the stage-times feature which should work out a darned sized cheaper than buying one of those plastic lanyards at the site.

Also included is an interactive map which will provide details of the whole site, including opening times of specific venues and directions between stages. The interactive map will also be used for competitions and promotions across the weekend.

Another useful feature is the My Schedule where you can not only plan your Glastonbury experience but also save your friend’s schedules too.

GlastoNav is free direct from Orange although, at 350kb, some data charges may be applicable depending on your mobile plan. Interactive features may also require a data connection as well so be aware of that.

My Glasto tips: Go see Jarvis and don’t miss Blur. Wear plenty of protection – from the sun. Eat, drink and be merry but don’t eat the mushroom omelettes. Drugs are bad. Mmmkay?

Orange launch cheapest £5-a-month contract

Nokia2333.jpg

Orange has today launched a £5-a-month pay-monthly contract.

The whopping 36 month deal gives you 50 texts and 50 minutes a month and comes with a free Nokia 2630, which has WAP – remember WAP?

Aimed at those people who rarely use their phones and find topping up either annoying or difficult, (so your gran then) the £5 contract is part of a groups of tariffs launched today, ranging from £5 to £15.

Also launched today are a series of SIM only contracts, the cheapest of which is an 18 month deal that gives you 500 texts and 100 minutes for £10 a month.

Kangaroo could be hopping Channel over to France

orange-kangaroo.jpg

So, it looks as if the poor developers behind the Competition Commission scuppered Project Kangaroo will not have all their good work go to waste. No matter that the BBC et al couldn’t get the multi-channel video platform up and running in UK because Orange’s parent company, France Telecom, is looking to take it across the Channel.

A spokesperson for France Telecom said: “We are examining this company and we see of course that it could be interesting. Nothing has been decided but we can confirm we are examining it.”

It’d be a bit of a shame for the consumer to see what should have been our service disappear off elsewhere but, with a suspected £20m invested in the project in the first place, you can hardly blame them.

O2 and Orange refuse to stock Nokia N97

nokia-n97-pic.jpg

A row has erupted between Nokia and network operators Orange and O2 over Nokia’s plans to pre-load the Skype VoIP service onto the N97.

The N97, Nokia’s flagship touchscreen phone due in June, is eagerly anticipated around here, but networks fear that including Skype on the device could cause them to lose voice revenue, with customers opting for cheap unlimited data plans over plenty of free voice minutes.

It’s prompted “high-level discussions” between the companies, which is code for “someone up top is very angry”. O2’s official comment says “We are currently working with Nokia to understand their Skype service and the business model around it.”

It’s interesting that the major operators have such a problem with the service, especially given the runaway success that Three has seen with its Skypephone and followup Skypephone S2, and the awards that the Facebook-and-Skype-integrated INQ has recieved. I’m sure Three will happily take O2 and Orange’s customers for the N97.

LG watch-phone to cost £1,000!?

lg-watch-venn-diagram.jpg

Gosh, that’s rather a lot. Mobile Today reckons that the LG watch phone that we covered here will be exclusive to Orange and cost a massive £1,000. Wow. The mere thought inspired Nate Lanxon from CNET to create the wonderous venn diagram over the the right there.

The G910 watch-phone was announced at MWC last week, and LG showed it off at CES too. Considering its appalling specs, requirement that you constantly wear a headset, and – now – massive price tag, it’s clear that Orange see this as a novelty for rich people, not a real device.
