Man BRUTALISED by armed police who thought his MP3 player was a gun

darren-nixon-mp3-gun-shame.jpgYes, they thought his MP3 player was a gun. They thought a 28-year-old mechanic’s MP3 player was a gun, when he took it out of his pocket to change tracks at a bus stop.

It was a “black Philips” music player, so he certainly deserved a warning to buy superior model in future – but getting held by armed cops and having his DNA and fingerprints taken is going a little too far…

Watch that new digital photo frame… it could be infected with malware

aluratek-photo-frame.jpgDigital photo frames are all the rage at the moment, and they seem innocuous enough, right? After all, you’re only going to be using them to display a few family photos.

The truth is, though, that the seemingly innocent device on your mantelpiece could be harbouring malicious software, ready to infect your PC. Some of it is specifically written to attach to portable storage devices.

It stands to reason, really, that any storage device, be that hard disc or flash memory based, could contain data which, when transferred to a PC, could manifest as a virus or trojan. Remember when a batch of Apple iPods was shipped complete with a PC virus?

McAfee Security reckons that the most likely point of infection for new hardware is in the Quality Control section of the manufacturer.

The iRiver Siren – generic but pretty little MP3 player

We’ve started paying a bit more attention to iRiver press releases ever since it revealed some pretty shiny things at CES. Here’s the first fruit of our new-found iRiver love – an update about the iRiver Siren.

The Siren’s not that special, really. We could say something about art-deco-influenced squared design and its simple yet pleasing range of three traditional colours, but that’d all be a bit unnecessary. It’s an MP3 player. It comes in 1GB and 2GB sizes, no doubt with the 2GB one costing ever-so-slightly less than twice the price of the 1GB model to encourage you to go for the extra space. We know all the mind-games they play.
