30 last-minute tech gadget Christmas stocking fillers

While I don’t condone the fact that you’ve left Christmas shopping to the last minute and you’ve spent nearly all your cash at the work’s Christmas do, I’ve written this guide because I feel sorry for your techie relatives who might not get anything this Yuletide.

So, here we go with the Tech Digest under-a-tenner stocking filler guide.

You’ve left it far too late to order any of this stuff online, but you have a few days to run around the overcrowded stores in your home town, and hopefully you’ll find at least a couple of these items.

Just don’t expect to find them in the 24-hour petrol station.

snoballer.jpg

Unless you’re in the highlands of Scotland, our British winters are rubbish enough that this low-tech gadget really won’t be much use. However, if you’re anywhere that enjoys deep, crisp, even snow, these Sno-Baller “tongs” could be just what you need.

It will produce perfectly spherical snowballs, great for lobbing at your mates, though it would be fantastic if you could also use them as a catapult.

Play Guitar Hero online for free with "Super Crazy Guitar Maniac 2"

Super-Crazy-Guitar-Maniac-2.jpgOK, now here’s a very annoying thing. Guitar Hero isn’t the best pressing buttons to music game there’s ever been by a long shot.

That would be FreQuency, as spelled out in superb detail by Chris over on our PlayStation blog PSPSPS.tv. FreQuency was made by the Guitar Hero people, only about five years ago when no one cared and when pressing buttons to music in your house wasn’t considered particularly cool…

Forget console: Facebook and OpenSocial are the real future for gaming

stu-col.jpgStuart Dredge writes…

There’s a Facebook group called ‘You can fuck off with your fucking Zombies’ whose title alone sums up the feelings of many people about the emerging Facebook games market. They’re short-lived novelties. They’re only marginally more interactive than the poking feature. They’re annoying as hell.

But y’know what? Facebook’s vampires, pirates and ninjas say more about how gaming will evolve in the next five years than any bloated military-themed Xbox 360 first-person shooter; than any rush-job PS2-to-PSP port; than any so-so mobile game based on a movie.

MySpace announces MySpace Games casual gaming service

oberon.jpgMySpace has revealed its next big push: into casual online games. The social network is launching MySpace Games early next year, in partnership with gaming firm Oberon Media.

It’ll let you play hundreds of web games, including multiplayer titles, while also sharing them via your MySpace profile. The games will all be free of charge, and will tie into MySpace, for example letting you play against your friends. In-game chat will also feature heavily. MySpace and Oberon are promising “further community initiatives” in early 2008 too.
