RUMOUR: Dell working on Android-based mobile internet device
A report in the Wall Street Journal suggests that Dell plans to release a mobile internet device as well as the much touted Dell smartphone.
The mobile internet device will, like the supposed smartphone, be based on Android and will run via an ARM-based chip. Two Dell insiders have claimed that the MID is slightly larger than the iPod Touch. It won’t have any phone capabilities.
The mobile internet device may even be released sometime in 2009 according to one of the insiders. There’s nothing official from Dell as of yet so we’ll just have to wait and see.

RUMOUR: Android based Dell smartphone?
This post is going to consist of little more than this blurred picture I’m afraid. It’s supposedly the much anticipated Dell smartphone.
Little is known at this point apart from that it will probably be running Google Android version 1.5. The leaked photograph, courtesy of a Chinese PDA fan forum, indicates that it’s going to have a slide out keyborad – it looks very Palm Preish to me.
Apart from that, not much else is known, so we’ll just have to sit tight and see what happens. As always, keep your eye’s peeled on Tech Digest – we’ll be passing on any updates just as soon as we get them.
Twitter generates $3million revenue for Dell
Back in March, this very blog suggested five ways in which Twitter might be able to make money.
Suggestion one was entitled “Companies must pay!” and highlighted how businesses were benefiting from free advertising via the microblogging site.
Today, it has emerged that computer giant Dell has made $3m from advertising its products via Twitter, with a third of this coming in the last six months – the period in which Twitter’s popularity has exploded.
This may seem small peanuts compared to the $12.3 billion of revenue Dell earned during the first quarter of this year, but $3million is still a whole lot of moolah. And it doesn’t really seem fair that Twitter won’t see a single penny of this.
The good news for Twitter is that Dell, who had previously dismissed the idea of ever paying Twitter for its service, may be coming round to the idea that there’s no such thing as a free lunch. They’ve admitted that Twitter offers a unique service that is incredibly useful in terms of marketing.
The web is full of affiliate links whereby commission is paid to sites linking to products – it’s what makes the free-content based system viable. It seems a bit silly that one of the web’s most popular systems isn’t involved in this system.

Dell launching PC software and games download service
Massive PC ubercorporation Dell hasn’t got the best reputation with gamers, despite owning the expensive Alienware gaming PC brand. That hasn’t deterred them, however, from launching a download service where you’ll be able to get PC games and software, as well as music.
Codemasters, Sega, Electronic Arts, Eidos and Atari have signed up on the gaming front to offer titles including Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box, Spore, Tomb Raider: Underworld, F.E.A.R. 2, Alone in the Dark and Football Manager Live. You’ll notice that none of those, with the possible exception of F.E.A.R. 2, could be called “gamer’s” games.
That might be because gamers are generally already invested in one download store -Valve’s Steam. I think Dell realizes that they’re going to find that audience very tricky to crack, so they’re aiming at a more mainstream target demographic instead.
As well as games, the service also offers software from Kaspersky, Nero and Lavasoft, presumably Kaspersky Antivirus, Nero Burning Rom and Lavasoft Ad-Aware respectively. It’s a bit of a shame for PC owners, because programs duplicating the functionality of all those bits of software are widely, and legally, available on the internet for free (for home use).
Lastly, there’s also music. Albums from “major artists” are available, there’s no DRM, and there’ll be new titles on a weekly basis. The catalogue doesn’t look incredible, and the prices aren’t any better than other download sites, but I suppose it could be handy for people who haven’t checked out Spotify yet.
The Dell download store will roll out across Europe in the next few months, starting with the UK, France and Germany. It’s been up and running in the USA for a while, and the UK site is here.
Dell's XPS One 24 all-in-one desktop PC now on sale in the UK
Dell has announced that its all-in-one desktop PC with whopping 24-inch display is now available in the UK.
To my taste, the profile of the XPS One 24 isn’t as nice as the iMac (which, rightly or wrongly, is what we all compare these all-in-one systems to) but it does benefit from a wireless mouse and keyboard and all the other connection ports neatly on the back of the display…
Dell to release smartphone, bored analysts suggest
Let’s face it, it’s all a bit quiet in the technology world after the shock of running around Macworld and CES so soon after the festive overeating, so it’s not surprising that a few new speculations are surfacing.
Take the possibility of Dell making its own smartphone. That notion’s been around since almost the same time last year and has now resurfaced.
An analyst with Kaufman Brothers, Shaw Wu, says sources indicate that a Dell smartphone “is closer to reality than before”…
