CES 2008: Microvision's diddy mobile projector the Show

The trouble with watching video on mobile phones is that their screens don't tend to be big enough to let you get any idea of what is really happening. So all you get is a poor reproduction of the footage – some of which is now starting to approach decent quality – which you have shot.

One solution is to offer mini projectors that can hook up to mobiles and then display the images on any light coloured wall you might have handy.

At CES Microvision is touting a prototype of a ‘pico projector’ it calls ‘Show.’ It is basically a handheld, battery powered unit which can project video from everything from your mobile to your iPod. The unit itself is tiny – it is just 7mm thick – and has a battery life of over two hours.

CES 2008: Is CES leaving Vegas? Is the next stop Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania?

It is bit like the ravens leaving the tower or Ant going solo without Dec, but there are whispers at CES that the show may soon be leaving Las Vegas.

Local paper the Las Vegas Sun reckons that the top bods at CEA, the organisation which hosts CES, now reckons that Vegas has got way too pricey and that delegates are being fleeced when paying for hotels, food and drink and, ahem the city’s other entertainments.

CES 2008: Green round up – Green Plug, Nokia, Marvell

Over the last few weeks much of the speculation surrounding CES 2008 has been that it will be the first in which consumer electronics companies start to parade green products. Well judging by what happened yesterday when the major makers all held their press conferences very little has changed.

The big news was that Sony, Panasonic and other makers announced a joint campaign to recycle gadgets. While we heartily cheer the news it means very little to UK consumers as 1 it is US only. 2 In Europe we have the fantastically named Wii directive which in theory does the same thing.

CES 2008: Toshiba re-embracing SD era with its 22LV505 – a regular DVD-playing combo LCD TV

High-definition format war? What high-definition format war?

Correctly realising that about 99.9999% of the world’s population is still perfectly happy to watch movies on DVD – or even lower quality DivX rips burned to DVD – smarting HD DVD format backer Toshiba is wisely also covering all last-generation bases with this – a 22″ LCD TV with built-in DVD player:

CES 2008: hands on with Toshiba's impressive new A100F hard disk HD camcorder

Most CES press conferences take place in grubby looking rooms round the back of the Venetian hotel. So this year Tosh decided to up the ante a little and make its big camcorder announcement to a gaggle of journos and bloggers right in the middle of the Grand Canyon. Yep you read it right.

The announcement lived up to the rather spectacular setting too with Tosh unveiling a high definition HD camcorder that’s going to have JVC and Sony looking over their shoulders. Tosh claims its new flagship model, the Gigashot A100F, is the smallest and lightest hard disk high def camcorder on sale, though I suspect Sony might have something say about that later today.

CES 2008: Sony reveals 16GB Memory Stick

sony-ces-16gb-memory-stick.jpgLooking for some exciting new ways to give yet more of your money to Sony? Or just after a bit more storage space for those illegally obtained PSP games? Or do you just always have to have the biggest thing to go in all your things?

Well knock yourself out – Sony’s just revealed a 16GB Memory Stick at CES. That’s enough room for a ‘warez’ copy of every worthwhile PSP game ever made, plus quite a few pirated Sony movies and albums! Thanks for making it so easy to carry around portable copies of all the stuff we’ve just stolen off you, Sony!

CES 2008 Roundup: Sunday

CES-2008-techdigest.jpg

Phew. It’s been a long day here in Las Vegas (as evidenced by me still working at 12.45am. We attended all the major press conferences, caught Bill Gates’ last ever CES keynote, and got a bunch of stories from the Digital Experience press event. See below for links to all the good stuff. Tomorrow, meanwhile, we hit the show itself…

CES 2008: Jook lets you broadcast your iPod music to people around you

jook.jpg

I haven’t been blown away by many things so far at CES this year, but Jook is one of the most intriguing startups at the show. The company’s technology currently takes the form of a gadget that clips onto your iPod (or iPhone, or Zune, or whatever), and lets you broadcast what you’re listening to to people within 30 feet or listen in to their devices.
