Digital Copy arrives in the UK with hopes of ending piracy. Pah!

The “Digital Copy” concept was unveiled nearly a year ago at Macworld 2008, but given the time it takes for most ideas to crawl the Atlantic seabed to Blighty, the first DVD title featuring the technology has only just been released here.

Twentieth Century Fox’s “What Happens in Vegas” DVD now comes with the ability to legally rip a copy of the film to your iTunes library, where it can then be moved onto your iPod or iPhone, or just watched on the desktop without having to use the disc.

Jim Gianopulos, chairman and chief executive of Fox Filmed Entertainment, said he was “thrilled” with this “incredibly simple way for our customers to get even more out of their DVD purchase”, claiming that iTunes compatibility wa one of the most requested features of DVD buyers…

Sony has announced its latest high definition projector, the BRAVIA VPL-VW80.

Just like the VPL-VW40 launched earlier this year, it uses Sony’s proprietary SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) technology — a variant of LCoS — to produce its full 1080p image.

Built-in Sony technologies include the BRAVIA ENGINE 2 (the previous model used version one) which handles colour reproduction, Motionflow which adds intermediate frames to the original video source, creating smoother movement, Dark Frame Insertion which optionally adds darkened frames to heighten contrast and remove judder, Real Colour Processing which allows precise tweaking of the colour space, and Iris 2 which dynamically adjusts the lens aperture based on the scene…

InFocus debuts affordable X9 720p DLP projector

InFocus_X9_Projector.jpg

InFocus has announced its latest projector, the X9, offering high definition projection at a distinctly budget price.

Thanks to the fact that it’s a 720p projector, rather than offering 1080p high definition, it comes in at a lower price point. There’s no skimping on quality, though, as it uses Texas Instruments’ DLP technology with BrilliantColor, and offers a 2,500:1 contrast ratio, 1,800 lumens brightness, and HDMI with DeepColor support…

Vaio AW

Sony describes its Vaio AW as a “new class” of portable, because it boasts a range of advanced features including a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution 18.4-inch widescreen using 3LED backlighting similar to that found on Sony’s high-end BRAVIA TVs, integrated Blu-ray drive, Dolby Home Theatre audio signal processing and 2.1-channel speakers with integrated subwoofer.

It features an Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 processor, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT, and 128GB solid state disk and 500GB hard drive working together in a RAID array. It also comes with Adobe’s Photoshop Lightroom, which should appeal to photographers and artists using the Vaio AW for image processing…

InFocus pushes out IN3100 Series multimedia projectors

infocus_in3100_3106.jpg

InFocus continues to push out business-friendly projectors with the launch of three new models in its IN3100 range. You know what, I wouldn’t mind seeing one of these sitting in my front room.

Sitting neatly between the IN1100 and IN5100 Series of projectors, these units features both DisplayLink and HDMI connections, meaning you should (with the help of an adapter here and there) be able to connect it to pretty much any PC or AV product…

Arcam FMJ AVR600… Sounds pretty good.

arcam-avr600-hd-receiver.jpg

The beast you see above is the FMJ AVR600, a powerful new mobile phone AV receiver for your home cinema. I mean, if “you” happen to have a large disposable income and a desire to experience films and the like the highest possible quality. I imagine if you were to watch the Blu-ray version of the 2004 film Downfall through this, it’d feel almost as if you were there in Hitler’s bunker with him, perhaps as a minor General or the work experience kid who everyone ignores…

DVDO intros EDGE video processor, for those who must have 1080p with everything

edge_dvdo_video_processor.jpg

DVDO has announced a serious piece of AV kit: the EDGE video processor that can upscale nearly all video formats to the hallowed 1080p, thanks to Anchor Bay Video Reference Series technology.

It boasts six HDMI inputs, so you can connect up a load of HD and “almost HD” gear, and two HDMI outputs. There’s also the usual assorted range of other inputs which will be perfect if you’re thinking of upscaling YouTube footage and other assorted ultra-low-res crap video…
