Why is Amazon UK listing the iPhone?

Here’s a poser: if the iPhone is only going to be sold through Apple Stores and its operator partners’ outlets, why would Amazon UK have a listing for the 4GB iPhone? You can sign up to get an email alert when “this item becomes available”, although puzzlingly, the date listed when “first available at Amazon.co.uk” is 1st December 2006.

Hmm, maybe it means Apple is looking to widen its distribution for the iPhone when it makes it over to this side of the Atlantic, possibly with a 1st December 2007 release date. Or maybe Amazon’s back-end system got drunk on iPhone hype and automatically added it.

Given Apple’s efficient online store here in Europe, it’d be a surprise if the iPhone does go on sale through other websites too, but we’ll have to wait and see.
