3G iPhone with GPS on the way… next year

iphone-3G-GPS.jpgJust half an hour to go until Apple’s press conference to launch the UK iPhone kicks off, but it seems 3G won’t be on the menu. TheStreet is reporting that a 3G iPhone is being developed, but won’t go on sale until the first quarter of 2008.

However, the silver lining is that the handset is set to include GPS for beefed-up mapping and navigation services. To be specific, Broadcom’s Global Locate is apparently supplying assisted GPS chips for the second-generation iPhone, which should make it quicker to get a signal than pure GPS.

Opinion: iPhone UK launch will be £250, O2 exclusive, but not 3G

stu-col.jpgAfter nearly three frustrating months of waiting, Apple is finally set to launch iPhone in the UK tomorrow, revealing the handset’s price on this side of the Atlantic, as well as which mobile operator has bagged the exclusive rights.

Kat’s summarised the latest rumours about Apple’s press launch tomorrow in London, for which invites have been sent out with the tagline ‘Mum is no longer the word’.

Apple iPhone announcement in London tomorrow: will O2 be confirmed as network provider?

iphone-sales-thumb.jpg
I think we all know by now, don’t we. Since UK journalists were invited last week to the top secret press conference at Apple’s Regent Street store, rumours have been circulating over just what they’ll be announcing, and everyone’s finger keeps on being pointed in one direction – the iPhone.

The Guardian is reporting today that after months of wrangling, O2 has been chosen as the exclusive network carrier for the iPhone in the UK, a deal which one operator told the newspaper was “madly money-losing”. T-Mobile, Vodafone and Orange were all being courted by Apple as well, and reportedly pulled out when the stakes got too high and the figures being mentioned meant they wouldn’t actually earn any money from the deal whatsoever.

Infact, 40% of revenue gained will be returned to Apple, it’s being rumoured, leaving not much for the actual carrier to play with. Sources who spoke to the Guardian are claiming that all four networks were played off against one another by Apple, all believing they had an exclusive, confirmed deal for the iPhone…

Is the UK-only Apple press conference next Tuesday about the iPhone launch here?

Very excited I was, to walk into work this morning and discover an email from Apple sitting in my Outlook account. There’s nothing better, unless it’s correspondence from my dear friends in Nigeria informing me of the amazing news that I’ve inherited millions of dollars from them. Good times, good times.

Speculation is brewing in our office as to just what Apple are hinting at with their email, with them inviting us to a special UK-only press conference at their store on Regent Street next Tuesday….

UK electrical industry agrees to phase out analogue TV manufacture ahead of digital switchover

digital.jpgWith the recent news that over half of all TVs sold last year were analogue, set against imminent digital switchover, it’s no surprise that the UK’s electrical industry has announced that it’s to phase out the manufacture and sale of analogue TV equipment.

By the end of the year, the group (which includes well known high street retailers, independents, and manufacturers), has committed to:

* accelerate conversion of all TV product lines to digital, including small (16-inch and under) TVs,
* move to all-digital TV and recorder production lines at least 12 months before digital switchover in each UK region,
* provide clear consumer information in electrical stores,
* label all digital equipment with the “digital tick” mark to indicate it will work before, during, and after switchover,
* phase out the sale of all non-digital recorders, including analogue DVD recorders.

HD DVD player manufacturers to drop prices

As mentioned at Toshiba/HD DVD’s IFA press conference, a number of manufacturers are set to drop the prices of their current and new HD DVD players, with entry level machines now coming in at around €300 (£200-ish).

Oliver Van Wynendaele, a manager in Toshiba’s HD DVD group, said that was around half the current prices.

Heading up the cheap-n-cheerful crop of new players is the Ventura SHD7000, though it’s worth noting that it won’t play every high definition format, bombing out short of HD’s 1080p holy grail. Still, not bad if you’re on a budget.

Ofcom survey: overall TV watching down, digital and HD up

tv.pngThe latest Communications Market Report from Ofcom shows that, overall, Britons are watching slightly less TV than last year, down 4% to 3 hours and 36 minutes per day, but that viewers are watching more digital terrestrial, satellite, and high definition content.

Digital TV of some kind is now in four out of five UK households, while for those 450,000 homes who have access to some kind of high definition content, 33% of their viewing time is spent watching it.

Echoing similar studies in the US, it seems that a significant proportion (43%) of those who do have high definition TV are viewing more as a result , particularly premium content such as films and sport.
