Sky and Universal Music partner to launch subscription music streaming and download service
Sky has partnered with Universal Music to launch a subscription-based music service offering both streaming music and “keep forever” download tracks.
The venture has just been announced, and the service doesn’t appear to have a name yet — at least, not a public one. Claiming the model is a world first (a claim I’m sceptical about), Universal Music will give it a flying start by making its entire catalogue of music (including U2, Kanye West, Amy Winehouse, Mika, the Killers, Snow Patrol, Luciano Pavarotti, ABBA, Rihanna, Eminem, Andrea Bocelli, Elton John, and Duffy) available, while Sky continues to negotiate with both major and independent music companies…
BBC iPlayer and YouTube popularity soars in past year
Since the BBC’s iPlayer was launched last year, the popularity of web streaming has increased by 168%, according to web usage statistics from PlusNet’s 300,000 customers.
On Monday 30th June, between 9-10pm, 287GB of video content was watched, setting a new record for the company. Factors contributing to this may have included people catching up on other programmes following the Euro 2008 final…
Qik and Flixwagon both testing live video streaming on the iPhone
The iPhone 3G may’ve lacked a video-conferencing feature so desperately craved by users, however this week both Qik and Flixwagon have announced they’re bringing their mobile video streaming service to the iPhone. You may be wondering how that’s possible with the iPhone lacking in, err, video capabilities, however both companies have worked around that obvious flaw by the sounds of things.
Flixwagon has developed software for jailbroken iPhones allowing for video to be streamed to the Flixwagon site live, or post-stream as it even stores footage for you. The news will only appeal to those who’ve actually hacked their iPhones of course, although the company claims they’re working on a legal version that’ll launch in the App store at a later date…
Who's joining the digital movie rental scene today? Motorola and Paramount!
If you have a Motorola telephone (commiserations, by the way) you’ll soon be able to watch a few crusty old Star Trek movies on it.
Excuse me while I go and change my trousers, I have just soiled myself with excitement.
Yes, while the world waits for Apple to pretend it’s invented 3G and video calling later today, Motorola has teamed up with Paramount to allow its users to stick movies on their handsets via their PC and a Motorola server. 40 films are…
Wholly unimportant world first – band streams live show through Facebook
Brilliant news. We doubt anyone noticed, but brilliant news all the same.
The no-doubt popular-on-the-internet band RedBoxBlue has made the claim, reckoning that its series of streaming video performances currently being shown on Facebook are indeed a world first.
It’s not 100% live, though – they’re only beaming taped…
WiiPlayer – a hacked and streamlined unofficial iPlayer app for Wii
Some extremely clever man has been working away on improving the Wii’s iPlayer, creating his own solution to the rather clunky and slow official Wii implementation of the Beeb’s streaming telly service.
Moaning that the Wii’s slightly duff Opera browser simply hasn’t got the right screen resolution to handle the BBC’s default text and layout, the creator has simplified the design, bumped up the font size and generally “Apple-ised” the look and feel of iPlayer so it’s quicker to operate and easier to find your way around…
Amazon set to launch its own streaming movie rental service "in the next few weeks"
Amazon’s big boss Jeff Bezos, speaking at the D6 conference, said the retail behemoth is planning to launch its own online video rental service rather soon.
That’s pretty much all he said on the matter, although he pointed out you’d be buying movies individually on an “a la carte” basis rather than paying a subscription, then watching via a streaming…
Netflix set-top box brings internet movie streaming to the living room
A set-top box for streaming movies right off the internet and straight to your telly? We’ve heard that one before. Apple TV does it, Xbox 360 does it… and although each of those are technically impressive, they haven’t set everyone’s world alight. So at first glance it seems that the Netflix Player by Roku doesn’t have a whole lot to offer.
However, where its rivals have let themselves down – being limited to fairly narrow selection of content – Netflix might be able to find an edge. As the US’s largest online DVD rental service, it doesn’t lack for potential content…
Zattoo launches in UK, bringing live terrestrial TV to your desktop
Zattoo has announced that its online live TV streaming service has launched in the UK, and offers access to the five main terrestrial channels (BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4, and Five), as well as some of the others (BBC Three, BBC Four, CBeebies, CBBC, ABC News Now, Bloomberg UK, and so on)…
Stream music from iTunes to iPhone or iPod Touch using Simplify Media
The problem with the iPhone and iPod Touch is that their fairly limited hard drives can be used for so much more than just music, that if you’ve got an extensive collection of songs you can’t carry them all around at once.
If that bothers you, and you frequent Wi-Fi hotspots often on your travels, then Simplify Media has updated their streaming software to include the iPhone and iPod Touch…
