IBM adds advert serving to DVD spec – film watching is DEAD as a hobby

cillitbang-dvd-ad-ibm.jpgIn a move that sounds like they’re trying to kill off DVD on purpose and force everyone to turn to one of those boring new HD formats, IBM has patented an advert delivery system that can pause DVDs so you have the pleasure of watching an advert.

It’s like they’ve examined the strengths of the DVD format, then created a feature designed specifically to destroy it…

Messiah's Darklite PS3 DVD/Blu-ray remote

The Darklite remote is a very nice little thing for controlling your PS3 with, if you’ve fallen into Sony’s trap of using it to watch films rather than play games. It has the double excitement of backlit buttons that light up AND a glowing circle, which will mesmerise all who see it.

The receiver unit has to be plugged into PS3, though, which might ruin the lines of your super-minimalist futuristic lounge, but other than that it’s all very pretty.

Sony gives three products a pink spray-job for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

sony-breast-cancer.jpgYou may be thinking this is better suited to our pink-clad sister blog, Shiny Shiny, but considering it’s for a good cause (and I’m sure there’s a few readers on Tech Digest wanting to spend the pink pound), I’m going to mention it anyway.

Modders hack the Nintendo Wii to play DVDs

wiiconsole89.jpg Now, although I’m a firm Wii fangirl, I’m not immune to admitting there were a few discrepancies between the features first mentioned when the Wii was announced, and what consumers were actually left with after the console hit the shelves. Every gaming manufacturer does it, although none quite as drastically as Sony with the PS3, as any avid reader of Gary’s UK Resistance knows all too well during those months when Europe was at war….

High definition discs outsell VHS tapes: is it really a milestone?

dvd.jpgAccording to research from Video Business, the combined sales of Blu-ray and HD DVD high definition discs was greater than that of VHS cassettes sold in the first half of 2007.

Although standard definition DVD sales also slumped by around 5% in the same period, due mainly to a weak bunch of new releases, the dominant disc format is hardly challenged by these findings.

Sales of pre-recorded video tapes are all but non-existent now, with most consumers preferring the greater convenience, features, quality, and smaller form factor of DVDs.
