The five coolest British made phones ever

Traditionally however in spite of having booming mobile industry and several very large networks – Vodafone leaps to mind – the British haven't been that great at making mobile phones. There has been the odd start up – and you will be blown away by the sheer ambition of some of the handsets – but in the main we have been happy to let the Scandinavians , Koreans, Japanese and more recently the Americans dictate what handset we buy.

More images of Rachel and Kiki

Rachel, Kiki, say hi to the Tech Digest readers. Everyone, that’s Rachel on the the left in the black. Remember, you guys met the other day. That’s right, she’s the upgrade of the Sony Ericsson Xperia only with a 1GHz Snapdragon chipset, Android OS and 8.1-megapixel camera. Charmed, I’m sure.

And Rachel’s friend in the black there, that’s Kiki. Now, Kiki’s a little more shy. She hasn’t told us too much about her but her unique dress with the screen you can view from both sides and intriguing looking lack of buttons are sure to raise an eyebrow.

Now, they’ve brought along some more from their portfolios today for us to have a look at and Rachel’s even got a little video of the OS that SE seems to be building to put ontop of Android. Have a good look and I’m sure you’ll agree we’re looking at two models with glittering careers ahead of them.

RUMOUR: Sony Ericsson Android handset leaked?

xperia-rachael-android-1.jpg

It seems like only minutes ago that we were reporting on Nokia’s possible Android-based smartphone. Oh, it was only minutes ago. Nevermind, you can never have too many Android smartphone rumours on a Monday morning – that’s what I always say.

The latest company to eye-up Android, give it a sly wink and cosy-up to it is Sony Ericsson. And a Danish website has the proof – or so they claim.

They’ve released a potentially leaked picture showing an Xperia-branded handset that supposedly will be running the Android OS. Codenamed Rachael, the smartphone is said to be powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and has HSPA. There is also an 8.1-megapixel camera, like the Sony Ericsson W995. No sign of a slide-out keyboard though.

No details of a release date or prices yet but, as ever, when we know we’ll tell you. We promise.

Sony Ericsson's latest mid-ranger: the T715

Sony_ericsson_T715-728-75.jpg

I’m not going to lie to you. This phone isn’t a world beater. But the T715 looks like a decent, compact and rather elegant mid-range phone.

It’s got a slide out number pad and so the thickness of 14.9mm is quite impressive. The phone only measures 91.5mm x 48mm and weighs in at 96.5g so it will fit quite comfortably in even the most skinny of jeans.

The screen is 2.2-inches with a 240×320 QVGA display that, apparently, will respond well in direct sunlight. It’s got 3G connectivity as well as Bluetooth. There’s also a 3.2-megapixel camera with LED flash.

Web connectivity via the 3G connection should allow for video streaming and Java and it also comes with Google Maps and AccuWeather. Music playback of MP3 or AAC shouldn’t be a problem but there’s only 90MB of built in storage. This is expandable by microSD – M2 memory cards seem to have their days numbered now then.

No word on availability, networks or price yet though. To me, this looks like a prime candidate as a free offering on cheaper plans (£20ish ones) or as an affordable handset for PAYG.

Sony Ericsson has today unveiled its new range of environmentally friendly “GreenHeart” phones.

The first phones to be released under the GreenHeart banner will be the Naite and C901 which both boasts an array of green credentials, from 50% recycled plastic cases to on-board e-manuals – to cut down on paper usage, and optimized display light sensors that use less energy.

The Naite also comes with a low powered green charger while the C901 ships with a green headset. Both phones are designed to emphasize Sony Ericsson’s commitment to green issues, illustrated by it’s pledge to reduce CO² emissions by 15% for all its products by 2015.

Despite their undeniable green-ness, neither phone has been compromised in terms of features. The C901 candybar handset comes wielding a 5 megapixel camera with smile shutter, autofocus, geo-tagging and face detection while supporting EDGE and HSDPA networks for quick and easy web-browsing.
