i-mate launches 810-F: unspectacular phone name for spectacularly active lifestyles
i-mate may not have excelled itself in the gadget name-choosing department, but its newest 810-F handset offers advanced features in a rugged, waterproof shell that’s designed to withstand knocks and scrapes.
The hardware features a full QWERTY keyboard and 320×240 resolution impact-resistant touch screen, 3G connectivity and 2.2GB of storage. It runs Windows Mobile 6.1 for all your email, music, gaming and web surfing needs.
BlackBerry 9300 "Gemini" specs trickle out
It looks as if RIM is lining up its next BlackBerry on the world. The 9300, codenamed “Gemini”, thankfully returns to the world of 3G. Other details gleaned include a larger, higher resolution screen than the BlackBerry 8900, better CPU, more rounded keyboard but with overall similar styling to the 8900 and Storm, and likely to have both Wi-Fi and GPS.
The bad news is that it may not be available for another year. That’s the problem with all this speculation — lots of pictures and likely specs, but not so much as a sniff of the handset for aeons…
SHINY REVIEW: Zara destroys the indestrucable JCB mobile phone
Ok, hands up who knew JCB made a phone? Nah, me neither. Apparently the news is slightly inconsequential though, seeing as their selling point is that it’s tough. I wonder how they’d like the strap line “The JCB phone – so tough that it breaks when you drop it…
Tech Trumpet: Nokia Classic Ring Tone Mix
Welcome to Tech Trumpet, where I attempt to make vaguely musical sounds using a variety of gadgets and computers.
Following today’s announcement of Nokia’s latest Classic handsets, I thought I’d put together a little ditty made up of classic Nokia ring tones…
Nokia announces trio of new "classic" mobile phones: 6700, 6303, 2700
Nokia has just announced the latest models in its “classic” line of mobile phones — namely the 6700 classic, 6303 classic, and 2700 classic. Detailed specs are fairly sparse at present (hopefully Nokia will put up some more info soon), but let’s take a look and see what we can glean.
Nokia 6700 classic
First up is the Nokia 6700 classic, (pictured top left) which supposedly “continues the legacy of the Nokia 6300”. This slim, smooth handset offers a 5-megapixel camera, A-GPS navigation and Nokia Maps, and high-speed data connection for audio and video. That’s all the info we’re getting at the moment, except that it’ll cost €235 (about £215) before subsidies etc…
SHINY VIDEO REVIEW: Lucy plays backgammon on the LG KF300
It’s not all dream phones and gadgets you can’t afford in this, the Chinese New Year of the credit crunch ox. No. That’s why we sent Shiny Shiny‘s Lucy out to take the LG KF300 out for a spin, or the “Big Flipper” as she called it. Don’t ask…
HTC's lineup for 2009 leaks
HTC seems to be the anti-Apple. Its products tend to leak out months and months before their release, in direct contrast to Apple’s legendary product secrecy. Yesterday, HTC’s entire 2009 lineup made its way onto the internet somehow, which means we now know exactly what the handset manufacturer will be releasing this year.
Perusing the full list, there’s a few exciting models – most notably the Rhodium (pictured above) and Tungsten, which appear to be the HTC Touch HD Pro. We might see an announcement at Mobile World Congress later this month about that. Let’s hope so.

Last.fm music service comes to Vodafone
Vodafone has announced that it’s done a worldwide deal with Last.fm to bring scrobbling and social networking features to its customers’ mobile handsets.
Initially available on several Nokia handsets, including the N95, N96, N78 and 6210, with other handsets being added soon, the application will allow access to Last.fm’s social music features and online music profile…
Nokia patent takes E71 and adds swivel screen
Patents are fun. Sometimes they turn into something real, and other times they’re probably just the musings of an over-imaginative designer.
One of Nokia’s recent patents probably falls into the latter camp. It looks a bit like someone’s taken the Nokia E71 and added a wide touchscreen as large as the handset itself which can swivel into position when ready to use…
Nokia 5800 XpressMusic coming very soon, in time for Christmas perhaps?
After a long time waiting, Nokia has finally announced that its Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (“Tube”) touchscreen mobile phone will be available across a number of markets “soon”.
Unfortunately, details are sketchy, and the UK isn’t specifically mentioned in the markets initially listed — that’ll be Russia, Spain, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Finland but hopefully that’s not an exhaustive list.
Coming to the UK? Probably. Before Christmas? Maybe. Price and network? Nothing obvious yet…
