Opinion: Why it's now COOL to be a GEEK

Jon_small_new.jpgJonathan Weinberg writes…

This is possibly the most important techno story I’ve seen all week, it’s officially ok to be geeky. A new list of the UK’s most coolest brands has been released and the top 10 contains SEVEN firms related to gadgets, gaming and the internet. So if that’s not a reason to embrace your virtual friends and give thanks I don’t know what is.

The iPod was only pipped into second place in the CoolBrands 2007 by James Bond’s favourite car, the Aston Martin, and you could argue there’s something geeky about being a fan of that motor. No longer is it nerdy to be geeky – because both are different…

Is the UK-only Apple press conference next Tuesday about the iPhone launch here?

mumapple.jpg
Very excited I was, to walk into work this morning and discover an email from Apple sitting in my Outlook account. There’s nothing better, unless it’s correspondence from my dear friends in Nigeria informing me of the amazing news that I’ve inherited millions of dollars from them. Good times, good times.

Speculation is brewing in our office as to just what Apple are hinting at with their email, with them inviting us to a special UK-only press conference at their store on Regent Street next Tuesday….

GEAR4 launches four new cases for the updated iPod range

This morning I wrote about GEAR4’s ambition to be first with new iPod cases, and this evening, here are the first four new designs.

JumpSuit Plus for New iPod nano

The new iPod nano gets a JumpSuit, a two-pack of silicon cases with a free sports armband. Featuring super-thin silicon, embossed click wheel controls, full access to all ports, and plastic screen protector, the JumpSuit Plus costs £4.99, and will be available on 12th September.

JumpSuit Shield for iPod nano

This is a silicon case with a hard plastic screen protector, available in black or ice white, and again features a thin silicon casing, a full-body, hard plastic shield, covered click wheel, full access to all ports, and GEAR4 Lanyard included. Cost £14.99 and arriving on 21st September.

Opinion: If only the iPod Touch had more storage capacity…

stu-col.jpgStuart Dredge writes…

Following the excitement of Apple’s product launch this Wednesday, we’ve all had time to sit back, take stock, and… reach for our credit cards. As with any new Apple products, the iPod Touch, new Nanos and iPod Classic are being snapped up from the start, with the now-predictable flurry of unboxing images online as proof.

Once I’d finished all the posts for our big Apple roundup, I actually went as far as getting my wallet out and logging into the Apple Store, with a crazed look in my eye and an iPod Touch in my sights. But then I stopped.

Bbrrrrrring! It's the retro iPod alarm clock!

retro-ipod-alarm-clock.jpgThe new 160GB iPod Classic has a promised battery life of 40 hours, which means in theory, you could wake up with it two days in a row without ever turning it off. Alternatively, you could get the Retro iPod Alarm Clock for your old-skool iPod.

It’s a charging dock with speakers and alarm function, designed to look like, yes, a retro alarm clock. The speakers are actually housed within the fake bells. Don’t worry sleepyheads, it does have a nine-minute snooze function.

GEAR4 claim they'll be first to market with new iPod accessories, applaud Apple's strategy

apple-launch-shot.jpg

With the advent of new iPods (Classic, widescreen Nano, Touch) comes the opportunity for a whole new range of iPod accessories.

GEAR4 reckon they’ll be the first company to market new cases for the new iPods, with some silicon, hard, and combination cases being available within the week.

What’s interesting is their viewpoint that, not only will Apple continue to dominate the portable media player market, but that “heavy iPod users” need at least two, or possibly three, iPods.
