appleeventinvitation.jpg
As everyone and their grandmother can tell you, there’s a super-secret Apple product launch happening tonight, and as ‘super-secret’ implies, no-one really knows what will be announced. Sure, there’s rumours circling thar intarwebs faster than it takes a Microsoft fanboy to say “yeh well the Zune 2.0 will be available in pink”, but nothing’s been set in concrete as yet.

Alex from Shiny Shiny, and yours truly from Tech Digest will be heading over to the BBC studios tonight to watch a live broadcast via satellite of Steve Jobs’s conference in California and will be merrily live-blogging the night away. So, keep pressing F5 on our live-blog post here at Tech Digest, as we’ll be updating every few minutes.

Want to hear some of those kuuuuraaaazy rumours the Apple kids have been spreading in the last few weeks? Read on below the jump for some of the best….

Opinion: Why music geeks won't replace their iPod with a mobile phone just yet

stu-col.jpgStuart Dredge writes…

We’re all set for Apple’s latest product launch tomorrow, with rumours about new iPods at fever pitch. There’ll be fat Nanos, touchscreen iPods with DAB tuners inside, and a Winehouse-branded model with a plug-in beehive speaker and trackmarks on the side. Well, some of those.

The point is that people are genuinely excited about the prospect of all-new iPods. Wasn’t the iPhone supposed to kill this sort of thing off? MP3 players, I mean. What with the iPhone, Nokia’s new Music Store, and Sony Ericsson’s success with its Walkman phones, you’d think standalone MP3 players were old news.

NBC Universal pulls TV shows from iTunes: no more Heroes for iPod owners

heroes_promo.jpg

It’s just a few days since Apple finally started selling TV shows on the UK iTunes Store for £1.99 a pop, but it’s now facing a serious hiccup over in the US.

NBC Universal has just announced that it won’t be renewing its deal to sell shows like Heroes (pictured), The Office and Battlestar Galactica through iTunes. NBCU apparently is responsible for 30% of digital video sales through the iTunes Store, so it’s quite a blow for Apple. Although in fairness, it’s also a bunch of own-nose-biting lost revenue for NBCU.

Warning! This iPhone will self-destruct if opened…

It seems that some unfortunate who was trying to physically hack open an iPhone in order to modify the hardware to unlock it from AT&T caused it to “explode”.

The victim explained:

The antenna cover was a bit tricky but eventually it came off. Then we started to open the metal cover (after taking out the 3 screws) and PUFF, up it went in smoke… It literally went up in black smoke. I[t] was so hot that when I tried to pick it up I burnt my fingers. So, this is for shure [sic] the most difficult part of the whole process. I don’t know what he did, as I had just stepped out of the room to fetch something when I heard a scream…they got such a fright. I will post a photo of the iphone… To everybody out there, be carefull….

Apple may launch official iPhone ringtones via iTunes on Wednesday

Even before the iPhone launched, we’ve been expecting there to be some way of purchasing and uploading ringtones to the iPhone via iTunes. Now several prominent US newspapers are reporting that Steve Jobs could use his special event on Wednesday (the star of the show rumoured to be new touchscreen, Intel-based iPods) to launch an iPhone ringtone service.

As the Crazy Frog will tell/irritatingly shout at you, there’s money to be made from ringtones, particularly as Apple may wish to cash in on the iPhone’s ability to assign individual tones to each contact.

Lego playset showing Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak from Apple, on sale today!

woznjobs.jpg It’s fairly safe to say that tech geeks and Lego go hand in hand, as comfortable with one another as Trekkies and their massive dress-up boxes.

Tomi have struck gold with the ultimate in geek toys, a Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak playset. Set in the early days of 1972, the playset features two little Steve characters with a custom-made computer (Apple, naturally), a circuit board-based project and a calendar…

Pour me a cold one with the Beer Server G3

g3_beer_server.jpg

The Apple G3 Server may be considered seriously outdated now that the likes of the Mac Pro have come along, but when it gets a mod like this, it’s worth a second look.

The G3 may struggle to run OS X Tiger, and it won’t run Leopard, but this model can pour you a Tiger Beer, or perhaps a Cobra, instead.

Does it work as a computer any more? Probably not, but who cares? I’ve got an old G4 Mac that I know just what to do with now.
