Body Mass Index, or BMI, is the conventional measure of health, purely based off height and weight comparisons. This can lead to very healthy, muscular people being allegedly obese, because muscle weighs a lot. Under the new system, with a Body Volume Index scanner, fat can be literally detected, the percentage of your fat calculated, and a truer picture of health resolved. The BVI scanner is expected to encourage those in the early stages of physical health improvement, when fat loss is “outweighed” by muscle gain. Select Research, manufacturer of the BVI scanner, hopes to make them affordable for GP surgeries in the near future. [GT]
