New Xbox planned for 2010? Microsoft doesn't even seem to know

There’s mixed messages coming out of Microsoft with regards to Xbox developments. First off CEO Steve Ballmer hints that there would be a new Xbox coming out in 2010 with motion sensing Project Natal cameras built-in. Now Microsoft’s Xbox boss, Aaron Greenberg, has stated that there are no plans for a new console.

Greenberg was keen to play down any talk of an entirely new console and insisted that Ballmer wasn’t referring to a new generation Xbox: “We are saying that the Natal will run on the Xbox 360, so there’s no new hardware to purchase. We’re barely halfway through this generation. We’re happy with the Xbox 360, so there are no changes from that standpoint.”

Project Natal was unveiled at E3 at the beginning of June and Microsoft hopes that the technology will allow them to compete with the Wii in terms of motion based games. If they can match the Wii’s fun factor then the Xbox certainly contains the hardware to blow the Japanese firm out of the water. Not literally.

Ballmer: We could be working faster on Windows Mobile

At a conference in Microsoft’s hometown, Redmond, CEO Steve Ballmer admitted yesterday that the company could be working faster on Windows Mobile.

Responding to a question from an audience member who complained that his employees were bringing in iPhones and Android Phones that were tricky to support, and wanted Microsoft to up its game significantly so that he didn’t have to deal with that situation as much, Ballmer responded: “There’s opportunities for us to accelerate our execution in this area, and we’ve done a lot of work to really make sure we have a team that’s going to be able to accelerate.” Here’s the full Q&A:

Windows to enter the Cloud next month, claims Ballmer

One of the current tech buzzwords is “Cloud Computing”, which basically means using web applications rather than software stored on the computer (it’s more complicated than that, before someone gets pedantic with me, but that’ll do for now).

It’s something that Google has been working towards for some time, with the introduction of its applications and the Chrome web browser, and Microsoft is keen not to be left behind.

Speaking at a conference in London, Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer said that a “new operating system designed for the cloud” would be introduced within the next four weeks…

Yahoo! investor urges Microsoft to take its partial investment offer directly to shareholders

Even though Yahoo!’s board opted to side with Google in its eagerness to shrug of Microsoft’s advances, the company may not be out of the woods quite yet. Mark Nelson, a partner in Mithras Capital, which owns 1.7 million Yahoo shares has written to Microsoft urging the company to reconsider its partial deal for Yahoo!’s search engine business.

Steve Ballmer to retire in 10 years from Microsoft?

fake-steve-ballmer-desk.jpg

Alright, you’ve got me – any excuse to post this picture of Steve Ballmer I spotted over at the Fake Steve Ballmer blog. Still, Bill Gates’s retirement is already big news in the industry, and he’s not even received his gold watch yet!

Originally his late date of work was meant to be June the 27th (22 days left of peace and quiet, Melinda), however he’s still going to be working one day a week, and remain as the chairman of the board. Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft is understandably irritated by Gates’s lack of willingness to hand the reins over to him, commenting recently “I’m not going to need him for anything. That’s the principle. Use him, yes, need him, no”…

Next Windows operating system to use multi-touch technology

Speaking at the opening night of Wall Street Journal’s “D: All Things Digital” conference in Southern California yesterday, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and fellow exec Steve Ballmer had a few things to share about the next step for the Windows platform. They were restrained when quizzed about the faults in the current OS, Vista, but acknowledged that in hindsight something could have been done better…

Microsoft and Yahoo! try again with takeover talks

And the world’s most expensive game of cat and mouse continues. Like shopping in a Moroccan souk, Microsoft has returned to Yahoo! after pretending to have tendered their final offer and walked away.

Two weeks later – i.e. now – Ballmer and his boys are said to be exploring a deal short of total acquisition of the second largest internet search company in the world but at the same time are still reserving the right to completely buy them out…
