Google Maps for Mobile gets an update – with friend tracking!

google-latitude.gifThere’s probably something wrong with the fact that I get little buzzes of excitement when mobile apps that I use get an update. This morning’s Google Maps for Mobile update was even buzzier than normal, though, because it introduced a new feature that people have been clamoring for for some time.

The new version of Google Maps for Mobile features a service called Latitude, which uses the GPS in your phone to track your location, and the location of your friends, much like Yahoo’s Fire Eagle service. You can see exactly where your pals are hiding out, and there’s plenty of built-in privacy control too.

On top of that, the service has added favourites, a new interface and various other goodies. It’s live on the web here, and it’ll work on S60 phones (like the N95), the G1, some BlackBerrys and some Windows Mobile devices. If in doubt, check the list on the Latitude homepage. At the moment it doesn’t work on the iPhone or Sony Ericsson phones, but that’s “coming soon”.

What do you think? Are you comfortable with your friends knowing where you are at all times? Personally speaking, I am, but I recognise that some people might not be so keen. Share your opinion in the comments below.
