Top ten changes I'd like to see made in the next Nintendo DS

next-generation-ds.jpg

According to virtually every tech or gaming-orientated blog on the internet superhighway, come July the rumour is that Nintendo will be announcing the next-gen DS console at the E3 expo.

As someone who’s rushed out and bought both previous incarnations of the portable gaming console, I can appreciate the huge lead made between the two, and as much as I adore the Lite, I can think of a couple improvements I’d like to see in the next version, which is rumoured to be called the ‘Liter’ or ‘Extreme’.

The rumour mill has already started grinding, with fingers being pointed at ‘larger screens’, with both possibly being touch-screen, and the hardware being ‘lighter and thinner’. So far, the DS fans aren’t really thinking outside the box, so if you read below, you’ll see my hopes for the next version…

1.) Flash memory – I know that game saves etc are saved onto the game cartridges, but if the DS took a few pointers from their rival the PSP (read on below), then they’d be needing a good 4GB of storage capacity at least.

2.) MP3-playback facility – sure, you can get external add-ons that will enable you to play media on your DS, but wouldn’t it be better if it was integrated?

3.) HSDPA chip – it’s not ever going to happen, but goodness, can you imagine? It already has Wi-Fi, so you can use the Opera browser when in hotspots, or play against your friends, but inbuilt HSDPA would allow you speedy web browsing without the need to be lurking outside Coffee Republic. A collaboration between Ninty and a mobile network would prove lucrative, allowing for a cheap monthly subscription to the web ‘n walk style internet service.

Peekaboo Pole Dancing concept game for the Wii: I’d like to see Reggie slide on that

peekaboo-wii-pole-dancing.jpg

Currently seeking a partner to help license their concept, Peekaboo Pole Dancing has sent out an email announcing their idea for a Wii game that’d have you ‘shake your booty’ and ‘spin your thing’.

Little else is said about the project, only that it’s a concept, and ‘A-list celebs’ like Carmen Electra, Kylie Minogue, the Spice Girls and Pussycat Dolls are already fans of the company, who currently sell portable dance poles.

Somehow I just don’t see this idea, ahem, sliding with Nintendo’s family-friendly…

Relive 2003 with the SimCity Box, containing five games

sim-city-2000-ea.jpg

If it weren’t for the assorted Sims games, my formative years would’ve been very lonely indeed. That’s why I’m so excited at the news that EA has announced the SimCity Box.

Containing five games from the SimCity range, there’s SimCity Societies, SimCity Societies Destinations, SimCity 4, SimCity 4 Rush House and The Sims Carnival SnapCity, which I must admit I’ve never actually heard of. A steal at $39.99, you’re saving $60 by buying them bundled together, and perhaps it’ll help tide you over until Sims 3 is released next…

Shiny Video Review: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 for the Nintendo Wii

Simon’s taken out a good few hours of his life to bring you a video review on Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 for the Nintendo Wii. He did it for you. He probably would’ve preferred doing the dishes or cleaning the mud off his bike, but no, he’s an unselfish type of chap who thinks nothing of sitting down for an eight-hour session playing the Wii, just for you. You should thank him, really…

Yesterday, as promised, I got hands-on with Rock Band. Now, this will be old news for our US readers, but I was so excited, after waiting months and months for a chance.

It has been given a release date here in the UK of May 23rd, with the price looking set to start at £130…just for the instruments. Take a look in the video above to see me trying my hand at each of the instruments, including the microphone.

WARNING: I am extremely tone-deaf and have never done karaoke sober before. Watch at your own risk.

Shiny Video: London's Guinness Book of World Records' gaming character costumes attempt

This morning I waved my gamer-geek credentials high in the sky from London’s Millennium Bridge, where the Guinness Book of World Records staged an event, attempting to gather together the most people in one place dressed as game characters.

Take a look at the video above for some choice costumes, including the twenty-odd strong group of school kids dressed as Mario (one of them shouted out to me, as I was also dressed as Mario, “Mario! we’re your sons!”), Crash Bandicoot, Sonic the Hedgehog, a chilly-looking Lara Croft, Final Fantasy’s Rikku plus a whole lot more.

You’ll be pleased…
