samsung_g800_mobile_phone_camera.jpgSamsung has today announced its G800 mobile phone, boasting a five megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom function, claiming it to be a world first.

Boldly claiming it to be the “perfect digital camera and the perfect multimedia mobile combined into one single device”, the in-built camera sports a number of advanced features including face detection, Wide Dynamic Range, image stabilisation, image editor, 4x digital zoom, macro, mosaic, and panoramic shot modes, auto focus, and xenon flash. In fact, some of these features have only recently been added to dedicated consumer digital cameras.

The G800 will also shoot video, though the initial specs don’t say at what quality. The phone features a number of photo and video editing functions, making it possible to edit, cut and paste films.

The 2.4 inch QVGA colour LCD screen shows off Samsung’s new graphical user interface, designed to be as intuitive as using a dedicated digital camera.

The phone is HSDPA, and supports mobile blogging functions. It also sports a full Internet browser, and Google and Yahoo! searching.

There’s not much mention of its other audio and video features — unsurprisingly Samsung really have focused (ahem) on the camera and on screen controls — so let’s hope that this “perfect multimedia mobile” doesn’t disappoint when it comes to playing back your tunes.

It has PictBridge, USB and Bluetooth, and the internal memory can be expanded with additional storage in the form of microSD cards.

The phone measures just 101 x 51.1 x 18.8 mm, and its slim design is maintained thanks to the camera’s inner zoom function.

Geesung Choi, President of Samsung’s Telecommunication Network said: “As multi-megapixel camera phone becomes more and more popular, the needs of actual digital camera-like features grow together. Samsung’s G800 will satisfy the unmet needs in the camera category with a true digital camera-like design and functionality. The G800 will enable users to capture and share precious moments in their daily lives through the enhanced camera functions in a fast 3G network.”

The G800 will be available across Europe from November, with full specifications, pricing and network/operator details to follow.
