The brushed aluminium-cased Movie Cube-R claims to offer all the main functionality of the video recorder, DVD player and hi-fi system in one portable unit, but is effectively just a high capacity hard drive with added whistles and bells. Hook it up for recording and time-shift recording from a TV or set-top box in whatever quality you like (HD if you have the kit), then playback via the remote or the controls on the front.
You can store a variety of formats, including (MPEG1/2/4, AVI and XVID), connecting to a screen via Component or standard composite video connection. There’s also USB connectivity and a card reader for adding files from other devices, including photos in JPEG, JPG and BMP file formats. You can also host and play music files in the main formats and there’s an ethernet port for networking.
Capacities range from 160GB to 500GB, with prices starting at £150. Expect to see it from September.
