Sony has launched the Cyber-shot S650 – a budget compact digital camera with all the features you would expect for the price range.

The S650 is a 7.2MP model with 3x optical zoom, 6x digital zoom and up to 14 x smart zoom. As you would expect for an entry-level camera, many of the functions are automated, along an icon-driven, on-screen function guide to see you through the basics. There’s also guidance on the 2-inch TFT screen as to how many snaps you can fit on your remaining memory at a selected image resolution. On-board memory is 24MB, but this can be boosted via Memory Stick.

A sensitivity mode of up to ISO 1000 should contribute to clearer, blur-free images in poor light, movies can be captured at 30fps with audio and you can take up to 460 images if you go for the optional Li MH battery.

The Cyber-shot S650 will be available in the UK from mid February 2007. A price is still to be confirmed.
