Palm: struggling smartphone company to lay off workers
Palm has had a pretty up-and-down ride of it all, making some kickass PDAs and Palm OS back in the ’90s, and now responsible for the not-all-bad Treo and Centro smartphones, and yet struggling to do well in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
Thanks to the evolving direction of RIM’s BlackBerry handsets, now firmly being targeted at consumers and not just business suits, and the user-generated furore surrounding the iPhone, Palm is losing market share.
Putting a brave face on things, a spokeswoman for the company said that this was merely a consolidation of resources in order to focus more effectively on future innovation and products. There’s a new Palm operating system planned for the end of the year (not much time left, chaps), and an unnamed device coming in early 2009…

We mentioned some time back that Vodafone’s exclusive on the Palm 500v had ended, with the name reverting to the Palm 500 for the unlocked phone. Well, we now have full date/cost details.

Palm announce new Treo 500v with Windows Mobile 6
A new Treo! A new Treo! Not only that, but Susi from our sister-site Shiny Shiny will be getting her hands on it later today, and knowing her awesome video prowess, will no doubt have a video to show of it tomorrow too.

Palm cans the Foleo, but promises Foleo II
There’s been negative buzz around Palm’s Foleo ever since it was announced, including the recent reports that it was being delayed due to problems synchronising with Treo smartphones (which was its USP). Now Palm has announced that it’s canning the Foleo before its release, taking a $10 million hit for its trouble.
Palm teaser site promises new smartphone on September 12th
Palm are dangling the proverbial carrot infront of our noses, with a teaser site set up claiming a new Palm smartphone will be unveiled on the 12th of September. With only eight days to go, I don’t know how Palm-fans will be sleeping at night.
There’s speculation rising all over the internet as to what the phone will be, but the general consensus seems to be that it’ll be the Centro….
Analyst: Palm Foleo delayed due to Treo synching problems (despite Treo synching being its USP)
This is just bonkers. Deutsche Bank analyst Jonathan Goldberg has issued a research note claiming that Palm’s Foleo device has been delayed due to software bugs that “apparently included an inability to syncronize the Foleo with most models of the Treo, in particular the nominally high-volume Treo 680”.
