Yahoo's computers link to pictures of "underage girls", humans intervene

In a gaffe which Yahoo’s computers couldn’t care less about, but which has caused some embarrassment for humans in the company, an automated system linked a news article to Flickr pictures tagged with the keywords “underage girls”.

It’s understandable how an amoral computer could make the association — the article concerned Ashley Dupré — however it turned up some rather dubious images that most people would not have expected to see linked to from a serious news article…

Yahoo! investor urges Microsoft to take its partial investment offer directly to shareholders

Even though Yahoo!’s board opted to side with Google in its eagerness to shrug of Microsoft’s advances, the company may not be out of the woods quite yet. Mark Nelson, a partner in Mithras Capital, which owns 1.7 million Yahoo shares has written to Microsoft urging the company to reconsider its partial deal for Yahoo!’s search engine business.

Yahoo! has announced the introduction of its ymail.com domain, which will allow a whole new range of email addresses to be registered. From tomorrow, new and existing users can join in the bun fight and try to grab a more memorable email address, as well as still having access to unlimited storage, integrated Instant Messaging, spam protection, and an ID that works across all of Yahoo!’s other services…

Microsoft and Yahoo! try again with takeover talks

And the world’s most expensive game of cat and mouse continues. Like shopping in a Moroccan souk, Microsoft has returned to Yahoo! after pretending to have tendered their final offer and walked away.

Two weeks later – i.e. now – Ballmer and his boys are said to be exploring a deal short of total acquisition of the second largest internet search company in the world but at the same time are still reserving the right to completely buy them out…
