Pop some popcorn and settle down to read the top ten Apple movie moments

jurassic-park-mac.jpg

Have you noticed that pretty much any film you watch these days includes a Mac? It’s become as ubiquitous as music leading up to a crescendo when a couple leans in for a kiss. Does the CIA really use Macs? According to Transformers, it does.

Hot Fuzz shows the police using a mid-1990s Mac, Jurassic Park (above) a Macintosh Quadra 700, heck, even in Zoolander Macs get a nice spot of product-placement in that all too infamous scene that caused many of you sleepless nights. The full list is over at Mac|Life, with knowledgeable details on each of the models the ten listed films…

LINDY launches small, stylish KVM switch for dual computer users

lindy_kvm_lite_switcher.jpg

In my mind, KVM switches were always the domain of the sysadmins in the IT department who had two PCs on the go but only enough room on their desk for one keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

Now, though, dual computer use is becoming popular at home, too, and desk space is often just as precious. Enter LINDY’s KVM switch, a modern, compact switch that allows any Mac or PC combo to be used with a single keyboard and mouse, together with a DVI monitor connection…

Apple announces WWDC08 dates: "a landmark event"

apple_wwdc_landmark_event0.jpg

Apple yesterday sent out invitations to this year’s World Wide Developers Conference, claiming that it will be “A landmark event. In more ways than one”.

Now, despite this being a boring conference for developers, not consumers, Apple events always seem to get people speculating.

Are the two bridges separating or converging? Do they represent the Mac and the iPhone? Possibly, though there are three tracks being offered at the Conference…

QTRAX launches, claiming legal access to 30 million tracks. Server overwhelmed

qtrax_beta.png

QTRAX, which originally launched back in 2002 but closed down due to avoid the risk of legal action, has relaunched today.

It claims that users will be able to find and download between 25 and 30 million copyrighted music tracks, with the blessing of a large proportion of the music industry.

“QTRAX is a magical and game-changing service that revolutionizes the way fans consume digital music,” said QTRAX President and CEO Allan Klepfisz.

Well, possibly not revolutionary. We’ve seen a shift towards “free” ad-supported music streaming and download services recently.

Opinion: Genuine Apple fan seeks exciting Apple Keynote

I was hoping to write a glowing report of Steve Jobs’ Macworld 2008 keynote presentation yesterday, but (even as an ardent Apple fan) I have found myself disappointed.

Granted, it was always going to be difficult for Apple to eclipse last year’s iPhone announcement, but I felt myself wanting more.

Maybe I’m getting too old, but I find myself desiring function much more than form. Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that the product announcement I was most impressed with was the Time Capsule. That’s pretty sad in itself, because it amounts to not much more than an upgraded Airport Extreme with a large hard drive in it, and existing software built in to OS X Leopard.

Mac users pay for more digital and CD music than PC users, report suggests

itunes_logo.gifIt seems that there’s always a new way to stir up the age old rift between PC and Mac users, and the latest report to have a go comes from the NPD Group research firm, who even go as far as to state that, “there’s still a cultural divide between Apple consumers and the rest of the computing world”.

Well, I suppose we knew that really. Apparently, half of Mac owners surveyed say that they have paid to download songs from sites such as iTunes, compared to 16% of PC owners.

In addition, Mac users are more likely to buy music CDs — 32% compared to 28% of PC users.

UK Apple fans to be treated to our own Black Friday sale, for tomorrow only!

apple-sale-flyer.jpgIt may not be on par with America’s Black Friday sale last week, but currently the UK is going through some sort of pre-holiday sales-blitz, with most high street stores offering at least 20% off their wares. It’s getting to the point where I’m refusing to pay full-price now, I’m just waiting for the day when I throw a diva strop in Sainsbury’s, horrified that their skim milk isn’t discounted!

Thankfully Apple fanboys won’t have to start throwing diva strops anytime soon, as the big Jobs has kindly ordered a discount on a huge range of Apple…
