Is Apple Pay launching on October 18th?

Apple’s clever new payment system could be launching next week – at least in the US, if a leaked memo is anything to go by.

MacRumours has got its hands on what it claims is a memo leaked from Walgreens, the American owners of Boots, preparing American staff for accepting Apple Pay from October 18th.

A launch on the 18th, or around then would make sense: Apple announced the payment platform, which sees users wave their iPhone 6 (or in the future, iWatch) to pay for stuff via NFC, last month at the iPhone 6 launch, and as the company has another press conference scheduled for this week (to announce iPads, we reckon), it would be the perfect time for Tim Cook to say “…and Apple Pay is available… right now”.

Sadly for British users, it is unlikely that the American and UK launch will be simultaneous: Payment systems are a new thing for Apple, and making sure everything works with retailers could potentially be a nightmare for both technical and legal reasons – so it could still be a while before we see Apple Pay over here.
