2014 Gaming BAFTA nominations revealed

The nominations for this year’s BAFTA Games awards have been announced. Awarded by the British Academy of Film & Television Arts, the awards are a relatively recent tradition that is, delightfully, lending gaming some credibility amongst serious arty types.

To be honest, there isn’t many huge surprises in the nominations – with many of the major AAA titles receiving the nod in the various categories. Leading the pack is The Last Of Us and GTA5, which both have 9 nominations by my count. It’s also nice to see indie breakout hit Papers Please and its creator Lucas Pope recognised in a number of categories – showing that the lo-fi can compete with the blockbusters.

I’m also pleased to see a nomination (under “Best Debut”) for Remember Me, a third person adventure game in which you must manipulate memories in “Neo-Paris”. Whilst the game itself certainly had flaws, the setting and premise were great – it’s exactly the sort of thing that suggests a sequel could be a truly awesome game (think how Assassin’s Creed 2 was a huge improvement on the first game).

The big awards do is due to be held on March 12th – and we’ll no doubt report the winners when it happens.
