Samsung confirmed the gigantic sales milestone with a blog post today, selling three times as many handsets over the same period since May 2012 as the Galaxy S2 managed in 2011.

“Meeting this sales milestone in five months sets another record for Samsung, and we are extremely proud and yet motivated to continue to provide our customers with products they love,” said JK Shin, president and head of mobile at Samsung.

It’s a massive chunk of the sales helping to propel Samsung to the top of the Android pile, including great successes in the tablet market.

By comparison, Apple shifted 26 million iPhones between 1 July and 30 September, according to their Q4 earnings report.
