o2_logo_3.jpgO2 customers in the London area will see their 3G coverage get a significant boost today. Following the news that Ofcom will allow the 900MHz spectrum, previously reserved for 2G services, to be used for 3G data, O2 have now used the frequency range to improve their 3G connections. Customers could see coverage levels improve dramatically, potentially by as much as 50%.

Nigel Purdy, Chief Technology Officer for Telefónica O2 UK, said: “This 3G900 switch-on is the latest in a series of network enhancements for O2, and is a first for the UK and Telefónica. We’ve acted quickly to bring the benefits of 3G over 900MHz spectrum to our customers and we’re thrilled with the results. Quite simply, on O2’s network, more customers can use more data, and experience it quicker.”

O2 may have got there first in terms of expanding their 3G spectrum, but all the other network providers will be able to make use of the new frequency space too, so don’t fret if you’re signed up with another provider; chances are they’re already lining up coverage improvements of their own too.

  • Great news for O2 users and another reason to sign up with them. They’re giving 3 months free on some mobile broadband contracts at the moment.
