New PS3 jailbreak lets you unban yourself, ban others

ps3-slim.jpgSony’s war on PS3 priacy has taken a rather unexpected turn, as their latest attempts to deter illegal game downloads have resulted in even more dramatic steps taken by the hackers.

Sony have so far been relatively swift in stamping out the hacked software, releasing this message last week prior to a new pirate-banning software update:

“A circumvention device and/or unauthorized or pirated software currently resides on your PlayStation(R)3 system. Immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from your PlayStation(R)3 system.

“Failure to do so will result in termination of your access to the PlayStation(R)Network and access to Qriocity(TM) services through your PlayStation(R)3 system.”

Undeterred, the latest Sony update to render pirated games unplayable has already been circumvented by the hackers in a new jailbreak. The latest hack however also gives the PS3 pirates the ability to unban themselves from the PlaStation Network online community, as well as the ability to ban other users. Ouch.

We’ll be watching Sony’s next move with great interest. We expect lawyers will feature heavily.
