The ITV Player will sit alongside the popular BBC iPlayer streaming app, which is already available on Sony’s console.

Six other channels will be added to the Playstation Network across European territories before the year is out. They are TV3 in Spain, Yahoo!7’s PLUS7 in Australia, Animax in Germany, YLE in Finland and NOS in Holland.

Sony will also be adding the MUBI movie streaming service, which offers classic and indie flicks handpicked by experts, from October.

SCEE CEO and president Andrew House also confirmed that the next PlayTV upgrade will be PlayTV Live Chat, allowing users to text chat with each other whilst watching programs, a service he said would come into it’s own in sporting events as users discuss the merits teams, players and referees.
