Microsoft to offer free ad-supported version of Works

Google offers free software, so why shouldn’t Microsoft? Well, that’s what it will be doing, but with a different business model to Google.

Microsoft will offer a free, but advertising-supported version of Microsoft Works. Unlike Google Docs and Spreadsheets, Microsoft intends to pre-install Works on computers and display advertisements stored in the cache. And when a user connects to the Internet whilst using Works, that cache of ads will refresh.

The advertising-supported Microsoft Works SE 9 will launch in a few months, with as yet unnamed hardware manufacturers.
