iPhone GPS speculation dampens down

iphone-aint-got-gps.jpgThe iPhone rumour mill is still in overdrive, but it seems yesterday’s big gossip about the iPhone coming with GPS built in may have been just wishful thinking. At least, satnav blog NaviGadget has poured cold water on the rumour with a dose of cold, hard sense.

“At this point we don’t really think Apple made the effort to throw in a standalone GPS chip that would drive the battery life even shorter. Maybe an application to support an external Bluetooth GPS receiver seems more sound at this point…”

Still, I wouldn’t put it past Steve Jobs to have a surprise or two up his sleeve for the iPhone’s launch – although I’d bet most buyers would rather it was 3G support than GPS.
