dotMobi, the company who administer the .mobi domain name extension, has announced that over half-a-million .mobi domain names have been sold, since the launch in October last year.

They claim that this proves that many people are interested in developing mobile-friendly online content, with millions of pages of content now online, and many of the world’s leading brands now using the top-level domain.

Travel sites in particular seem to have taken off, along with car brands, news and entertainment from the likes of ESPN, Maxim, Fox, and CNN Money, plus mobile operators.

“The results demonstrate the strong role dotMobi is playing in driving the creation of mobile Internet content on the Internet,” said Neil Edwards, CEO of dotMobi. “Most importantly, the mobile industry’s consumer focus around creating .mobi sites is bearing strong results in a short period of time. Consumers finally have easy-to-use and affordable made-for-mobile content.”
