Google Checkout – the company’s online payment system – is heading to the UK.

Although an obvious competitor to PayPal, Google’s system, which has been available in the US since June 2006, is pitched more at merchants than for person-to-person transactions and uses your Google ID (the one you probably have from signing up to Gmail). It also offers fraud protection for some extra peace of mind.

And if you’re a trader, the company offers free transaction processing based on your spend on Google Adwords.

If you’re looking for a merchant using the system, keep an eye out for the “shopping basket” logo next to a Google Ad.
