Another attempt at shifting VoIP calling towards the mass market is the Philips VOIP841, a Skype Certified DECT cordless phone that offers net calls without the PC.

Easy to install, the VOIP841 connects directly to a broadband Ethernet modem for Skype calling, whilst still able to receive and make calls using traditional landline services. Names and details of up to 500 Skype contacts can be viewed on the phone’s full-colour (64k), full-graphic display, which also indicates your current Skype status. Calls to Skype contacts, anywhere in the world, are obviously free and there’s the option of calling non-Skype contacts at cheaper rates than your landline.

The cordless handset has a talktime of up to 12 hours and a choice of up to fifteen polyphonic ringtones, which you can assign to different types of call or specific callers.

Available from March, it retails for £130.
