If you regularly need to change the compression settings on your JPEG picture files, so you can send them in emails or use them web pages, for example, then you know it can be difficult to quickly see what effects higher or lower settings will have on picture quality. Propellerhead has been trying out a little freeware program called CSDN Pic Viewer. This has a side-by-side compression preview display that shows before and after effects, and the resultant file sizes. It works with all common image file formats, there’s a fast batch conversion facility, picture browser and slideshow, ‘smart’ picture resizer and it only takes up a few megabytes of hard disc space.

The only thing to watch out for is that it needs the .NET Framework plug-in to work, you may already have it, otherwise it can be downloaded free from the Microsoft web site. If you like that they take a look at the hundreds of other great tips and utilities featured on PCTopTips
