garmin_nuviphone_1.jpgGarmin has announced that it’s launching its first mobile phone. The nüvifone is a handset which incorporates a web browser and a personal satellite navigation system.

Garmin are certainly no stranger to GPS navigation devices, but what else are they bringing to this crowded market?

Well, it’s hopped on the iPhone bandwagon by offering a 3.5-inch touchscreen, though to be fair, Garmin has been making touchscreen navigation devices for some time, and very good they are too.

It’s 3.5G (HSDPA) compatible — a definite plus for web browsing — has an onboard camera offering video support, GPS-tagged photos thanks to Google’s Panoramio service, music player, email, and personal messaging. All of the navigation functionality of the nüvi is in place, too, so it shouldn’t be a tough leap for those already used to those devices.

Exact specs aren’t available at present, with the device not shipping until the autumn, but the product shots look promising, with some nice touches expected.

Garmin will be showing the nüvifone off at the Mobile World Congress next month, so hopefully we’ll get a better idea of the specs, and who’ll be distributing it in the UK, then.
