The move is designed to encourage more users to quickly take and share photos and videos from within Twitter’s own app. Relevant hashtags and location information will be suggested for people who use the camera with geo-services switched on.
Meanwhile, photos and videos will also appear larger when taken with its updated camera feature.
“People come to Twitter to see and talk about what’s happening,” said Keith Coleman, head of consumer product at Twitter.
“It’s easy to share an idea by sending a tweet. But we want to make it easier to capture and share what you’re seeing in front of you with photos and video.
“We want to help you get what you’re seeing in front of the right audience. This update is an evolution of tweeting towards that goal.”
Twitter plans to introduce more camera updates in the future as it looks beyond its text-centric service, which limits users to 280 characters per tweet.
Last month, the social network invited users to apply for a new testing programme looking to improve user experiences on the site. A new prototype app for successful applicants will enable testers to try out potential new features on the service and give feedback to the firm.
The programme will include trial features such as a new design for replies to tweets, including a new rounded, bubble-like look to replies that make them appear more similar in appearance to text messages on smartphones.
